SURVIVING THE SKY-RATS: An Appraiserโs Guide to Eating Lunch at Cowes Jetty ๐
Youโve just wrapped up a brutal morning of property appraisals around town. Your brain is fried, your notes are a mess, and all you want to do is sit on the foreshore or walk down the iconic Cowes Jetty to peacefully eat your fish and chips.
But out here on Phillip Island, you aren't the appraiser. You are the target. ๐ฏ
The local silver gulls patrolling the pier line up along the wooden railings like a highly organised, red-beaked crime syndicate. They will literally watch you unwrap your lunch from the cypress trees and dive-bomb to sn**ch a hot chip straight out of your hand. If you want to survive the inter-appraisal lunch break with your dignity intact, you need a tactical defense strategy:
Stare them down. Gulls are absolute cowards. Wildlife research shows they take significantly longer to approach food when a human is staring directly at them. Lock eyes with the boss bird on the railing and don't look away. ๐๏ธ
Anchor your blind spot. They love a stealth attack from behind. Avoid sitting completely exposed at the end of the pier. Sit with your back firmly against a solid wall, the foreshore transit buildings, or a high structural bench to cut off their favorite angle of approach. ๐งฑ
Shield your inventory. Never leave your paper wrapper open while looking down at your phone to type up property notes. Keep your lunch covered or use your hand as a literal roof over your chips. ๐ก๏ธ
Make some noise. If a particularly brave bird encroaches on your immediate perimeter, give it a loud, sharp, assertive shout. Gulls are highly averse to confident human voices and will bolt back to the sandflats. ๐ฃ๏ธ
Fieldwork on the Island requires constant vigilance, team. Your clients are tracking your performance, but the gulls at the pier are tracking your lunch.
