Top genetics in demand: Nundoone & Bindaree stud rams reach dual top price - The Land Words & Photos by Fiona Aveyard.
Two stud rams shared the top price honours at the 28th annual Bindaree and Nundoone Top of the Drop Ram Sale at Pinehurst, Merrygoen, on Wednesday, September 2.
The sale had 64 of 85 rams sell to a $5800 top and average of $1681 for the offering of two stud rams and 83 flock rams.
Lucy Parkes, Lynwood Border Leicester stud, Arthurville, secured the opening Bindaree stud ram for $5800, while Jimmy Gilmore, White Gold Poll Dorset and Border Leicester stud, Inverell, matched the money for the Nundoone offering.
Ms Parkes paid $5800 for Bindaree B250040, a 121-kilogram triplet son of Wattle Farm 230177.
The ram had placed third in the ram lamb class at the NSW State Sheep Show and recorded a post-weaning weight Australian sheep breeding values (ASBVs) of +14.53, adult weight of +19.96 and Border Leicester index of 125.82.
Ms Parkes said she was attracted to the ram's overall type and potential as a sire.
"I love his outlook. He has a beautiful, even, dense fleece and a very masculine head," she said.
"I'm excited about his potential in the stud and to see his progeny."
The equal-top Nundoone ram, N250027, sold for $5800 to Jimmy Gilmour for use in his White Gold stud.
Mr Gilmour said her was very pleased with his purchase.
"He is a very correct ram, with a great carcase to go with it."
The 112kg son of Bauer 230132 recorded a post-weaning weight ASBVs of +7.72, adult weight of +11.04 and Border Leicester index of 105.96.
The flock ram offering reached $3600 for Bindaree B250165, which sold to Alan Grumley, Darjeeling Border Leicester stud, Narrabri.
The 100kg twin son of Raywil 230065 recorded a post-weaning weight ASBVs of +9.17, adult weight of +13.23 and Border Leicester index of 107.33.
Long-time buyer John Bullock, Fraddon Hills, Wellington, returned to secure six flock rams, selecting particularly for length and stretch.
"We were looking for length and stretch," Mr Bullock said.
Volume buyer was Declan H***e, Bell-Air Pastoral Company, Nyngan. Mr H***e purchased 12 rams on the day.
Thomas Woods, Lockwood, Narromine, put together an even three-ram draft, taking consecutive lots 33, 34 and 35 for $2200, $2000 and $1600 respectively.
The well-matched selection ranged from 92kg to 103kg and included two sons of Wattle Farm 230177 and a son of Ellingerrin 210175.
Luke Peadon, Andrew Peadon Agencies, Trangie, also operated for clients during the sale, including Irving, Irving and Son, Warren, which was selecting for masculine rams.
Jason Hartin, Hartin Schute Bell, Narromine, acted on behalf of Luke and Ada Barber, Gilgai, Narromine, who were looking for rams that would "put numbers on the ground".
The Turnbull family and Monk partnership were among the repeat buyers active through the flock ram offering.
In opening the sale, co-principal Reg Sweeney pointed to the unusual alignment of strong sheepmeat and wool conditions and encouraged buyers to make the most of the market.
