🏨 The Farmers Hotel, Vacy

The Farmers Hotel at Vacy has a history going back to 1858, when the first hotel here was built and known as the Halfway House Inn.

Vacy was an important stopping point between Paterson and Gresford, making the hotel a convenient place for travellers and locals in the early days of the district.

In June 1896, the hotel was renamed the Farmers Hotel by the new licensee, Bernard Higgins.

Unfortunately, only a few months later, in November 1896, the hotel was destroyed by fire.

A temporary hotel operated from a nearby building while a new hotel was constructed, with the new Farmers Hotel opening in 1897.

So when you visit the Farmers Hotel today, you’re looking at a place with more than 160 years of history behind it.

I reckon that’s pretty impressive for a country pub and another great piece of history from the Vacy and Paterson Valley area. 🍻

🏨 The Beatty Hotel, Gresford

The Beatty Hotel at East Gresford has a fascinating history, with the hotel’s story going back to the 1860s and the old Junction Inn.

John Beatty became licensee of the Junction Inn in 1872 and remained associated with the hotel for many years. The original premises were a large timber building that also included a saddlery, pharmacy and joinery.

In 1900, James Boydell decided to build a new two-storey brick hotel beside the old premises. By April 1901, John Beatty had transferred his licence into the new building, which became known as the Victoria Hotel.

The hotel continued under the Victoria name until 1937, when it became the Beatty Hotel.

The present building has now been standing for more than 120 years, making it a pretty special part of East Gresford’s history.

I reckon old country pubs like this are fascinating — they aren’t just buildings, they’re part of the story of the people and communities that grew around them. 🍻

🏨 The Bank Hotel, Dungog

The Bank Hotel in Dungog has a fascinating history, with the story of the site going back to 1876.

The original building was constructed as a residence by the Boots Brothers. In 1891, it was converted into a hotel and became known as Brady’s Bank Hotel.

The building we see today came later. The original hotel was replaced by the present two-storey brick building in 1911, complete with its distinctive verandah and decorative ironwork.

One of the more interesting moments in its history happened in 1901, when Edmund Barton, Australia’s first Prime Minister, addressed a crowd from the hotel’s balcony while Dungog was part of his electorate.

The Bank Hotel is now recognised as a heritage item in Dungog and remains one of the town’s well-known historic buildings.

So next time you pass through Dungog, have a look at the old Bank Hotel and remember that there’s a lot more history behind those walls than first meets the eye. 🍻

There’s something special about stopping in at a little country café, and Twin Rivers Cafe in Gresford is one of those places that feels right at home in the town.

Gresford has always had that relaxed country character about it, and a café like this fits perfectly into the local scene. It’s the sort of place where you can drop in for a coffee and something to eat, take your time and watch the world go by.

I reckon these small local businesses are what give country towns their character. They become places where locals catch up, visitors stop for a break and people get to enjoy a bit of good old-fashioned country hospitality.
