By day two, everyone’s got a job nobody gave them.

There’s the one who cooks. The one who’s somehow always on drinks. The one who claims the pizza oven and won’t let anyone else near it. And the one who runs the bowling tournament like there’s a title on the line.

Then there’s the one whose entire job is doing nothing at all, which is arguably the most important role in the house.

Five hotel rooms, or one front door?

Split across a hotel, a group spends the holiday in a corridor. Someone’s on a different floor, the kids have to be quiet after eight, and everyone disappears into separate rooms the moment dinner finishes.

Seven bedrooms here, 18 people, two living areas and a pool in the middle of all of it. Same group, same nights, a completely different trip.

The bags go in, someone gets one last swim, and for the first ten minutes of the drive nobody says much at all. Everyone’s still in it.

Then it comes, usually from the back seat. Same time next year?

The pool is indoors. The weather doesn’t get a vote.

A grey morning in the South West doesn’t change the plan when the pool is inside. The gym sits right next to it for whoever still wants their routine, the sauna is there for afterwards, and breakfast comes with the bay in view.

Most milestone birthdays get a two-hour table.

Book a restaurant and the night runs to someone else’s schedule. There’s a sitting, there’s a bill, and there’s a taxi queue at the end of it.

The pavilion has a gas BBQ, a pizza oven and a cocktail bar, and it looks out over the bay. Eighteen people sleep on site, so nobody’s watching the clock and nobody’s driving. The cinema and the bowling alley are still there at midnight if the night wants to keep going.

The teenagers haven’t been upstairs since breakfast.

That’s the bit parents don’t expect. You book it for the family and assume the fifteen-year-old will be on a phone in a corner by day two.

Then there’s a bowling alley with electronic scoring, a squash court, a pool table and a 12-seat cinema, and they take over the whole lower level and barely surface.

The adults get the pool to themselves. Everyone wins that one.

The house that gets the little ones to bed without a fight.

Most holiday houses are where you sleep between the activities.

You book somewhere nice, then spend the week driving to whatever you came to do, and paying for all of it.

A 2-lane bowling alley, a 12-seat cinema, a squash court, a pool table, an indoor-outdoor pool and two heated spas. The beach is a walk away and the w**e trail is about 15 minutes for the day you feel like leaving.

Some days you won’t.
