The history of rocklobster fishing goes back a long way in Port MacDonnell and the old boat slipway was located right next to the jetty. The fishing boats would be taken across the main road into the old boatyard, which had an elaborate set of railway tracks. The old wooden boats required lots of maintenance and fishermen could often be seen sanding and painting the boats during the offseason. An area in Commonwealth waters in the Southern Ocean off Victoria and South Australia, is being considered for future offshore renewable energy projects, such as offshore wind. We are seeking your views on this proposal and how offshore wind developments could share this area.

Lobster factories have employed locals for many years in Port MacDonnell. Rocklobsters caught in the earlier days were processed differently to today. Back then lobsters were cooked and the meat was picked by factory hands, you could also buy cooked legs, which were better known as spiders.
Times have changed with the live export market. Factory workers now prepare the live and kicking lobsters by placing them in boxes, wood wool and ice packs are carefully placed around the lobsters. A forklift loads the boxes lobsters into a transport truck which makes its way to the Melbourne airport, with the lobsters then destined for China.

A big step forward today for renewable energy.

Delighted to be in Portland with my Victorian colleague Lily D'Ambrosio MP to begin consultation for the Southern Ocean offshore wind zone.

✅ Enough wind to power 8 million houses
✅ 3000 jobs in construction and another 3000 on-going
✅ no emissions energy for Portland’s important industries.
