REIWA has received the following from the WA Police Dept:
My name is Emma Barnes and I am the acting Officer in Charge of Gosnells Police Station. The reason for my writing is to provide some crime prevention advice for owners of rental properties not currently tenanted.
Recently Police have seen a significant increase in burglary offences occurring at vacant rental properties. Officers have identified seven in the last 10 days, all within the Gosnells policing sub-district. If you are the owner of an unoccupied property, there are a few crime prevention ideas you can implement to minimise the risk of being a victim of such offences.
• Check the mail box regularly, not allowing junk mail to build up;
• Keep gardens well maintained, not overgrown;
• Every few days attend and put the lights on overnight, so it appears someone is home;
• Communicate with the neighbours so that they are aware of the situation. Pass on your contact details, so they can advise if anything suspicious does happen;
• Be vigilant when providing address details of the vacant premises to people who “claim” to be looking for a rental;
• Check that windows and external doors are locked securely every time prior to leaving the property.
These suggestions are minimal is cost, but could save you in the long run.
Crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility.
