🌟 Rise UP – Be Your Best, Own Your Future 🌟

Recently, our Gapuwiyak staff and members had the opportunity to participate in the Rise UP workshop, facilitated by Tanyah Nasir and her sister Joanne Nasir from Tanyah Nasir Consulting Services.

Designed specifically for Indigenous Australians, Rise UP provides a culturally safe space for participants to reflect on their lived experiences, strengthen their sense of self, and build the skills needed to create the future they want. Through critical thinking, self-reflection, and practical life skills, the program encourages personal growth, resilience, confidence, and positive decision-making.

The workshop explored important themes including:

✨ Belief in self
✨ Self-confidence and self-worth
✨ Positive attitudes and owning your future
✨ Informed decision-making
✨ Resilience
✨ Managing choices and change

Over the course of the program, participants engaged in meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and challenged themselves to think about the strengths they already possess and the possibilities ahead.

A huge thank you to Tanyah and Joanne for travelling to Gapuwiyak and delivering this empowering program. We are grateful for the knowledge, encouragement, and inspiration they shared with our staff and community members.

As Tanyah says, "The work we do is about transformation and healing people from the inside." We are proud to support opportunities that invest in the strength, wellbeing, and leadership of our communities.

United for a brighter future, Gapuwiyak community came together on Friday to celebrate International Women’s Day with a powerful women’s march through community, including a special stop at Gapuwiyak School. The march finished at Lake Evella where the East Arnhem Regional Council team kindly provided a BBQ lunch for everyone to share.

It was wonderful to stand together and celebrate with so many organisations supporting women, families and community: Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation, Gondal, Children and Families on Country, FaFT, Gapuwiyak Police, ALPA, Bush Miyalk, and the East Arnhem Regional Council teams.

Thank you to everyone who walked, supported and celebrated the strength of women in community. When we support women, we strengthen families, culture and future generations.

November 2025- Dhuludur - Newsletter

Dhuludur – Build-Up / Time of Rising Heat
Dhuludur brings rising heat, still air, and the first towering storm clouds as Country prepares for the Wet. Lightning begins before the rains, and families watch the changing winds, tides, and birds for signs of the season ahead.

Walking Together, Standing Strong
This month, Galiwin’ku and Gapuwiyak staff have supported women and families through safety planning, advocacy, and wellbeing programs. Quiet but vital work that keeps our communities strong.
Gapuwiyak marked a historic milestone, honouring Dr Paul Gurrumuruwuy Wunungmurra, the first Yolŋu person awarded a PhD for original research. In Galiwin’ku, staff attended the Indigenous Australian Datathon 2025 and First Nations UNLIMITED Leadership Summit NT in Darwin, while locally women and staff continue co-designing the Wellbeing Programs. Weekly Miyalk Club gatherings and bush trips provide safe spaces for connection, healing, and time on Country.

🧡16 Days of Activism against Gender - Based Violence 🧡
Highlighting technology-facilitated abuse, we have been sharing Yolŋu Matha resources with families to stay safe and informed. Every woman and child has the right to be safe, at home, in community, and online.

🧡 No violence. No silence. No excuses. 🧡

🧡Every year on 25 November since 1999, Global communities mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 🧡

Day 1 of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence 🧡

But for too many women and girls, violence is not something marked once a year it is something survived every day.

Here in Gapuwiyak, we know the impact this has on families, communities, and future generations. Violence causes long-term physical, emotional and psychological harm, and continues to deepen gender inequality.

This year, Galiwin'ku Women's Space Aboriginal Corporation and Gapuwiyak Womens Space - GWS is calling on our community to turn the 16 Days of Activism into 365 Days of Action because every woman and girl has the right to be SAFE. EVERYWHERE. ALWAYS.

GWS is joining the 16 Days of Activism as part of the UN Women UNiTE 2025 campaign, which this year highlights one of the fastest-growing forms of abuse: digital violence against women and girls.

🧡Safe. Everywhere. Always. is a call for all of us to come together and commit to real, meaningful change 🧡

Every family, every clan, every workplace, every service we all have a role in creating safer homes, safer community spaces, and safer online spaces.

Let’s stand together to speak up against violence, challenge harmful myths, and promote respect, care, and safety in all relationships.

Violence against women is not just a women’s issue. It affects the whole community.

🧡 No violence. No silence. No excuses. 🧡

📣 Our October Newsletter is here!
We’re excited to share this month’s updates from Galiwin’ku Women’s Space, highlighting community strength, leadership, and the work happening across Galiwin’ku and Gapuwiyak.

🌩️ Liyagalawumirr (Hot Season / Build-Up to the Wet)
As the hot season rises and the land dries under the strong sun, the first pre-monsoon storms begin to swell our rivers and creeks. Families prepare for ceremony, hunting, and gathering, reconnecting with Country as barramundi, mullet, crabs, turtle, bush fruits, and yams signal the abundance of this time.

Here’s a glimpse of what’s inside this edition:

✨ Blak Business Awards Recognition
GWS was honoured as Blak Community Controlled Organisation of the Year at the NT Indigenous Business Network, Blak Business Awards. This celebrates the leadership and hard work of our team and community in creating safe, healing spaces for women and families.

✨ Empowerment Conference 2025
In October, women came together to share stories, culture, and leadership. Delegates from NPY Women’s Council, Tennant Creek Women’s Refuge, and Aotearoa/New Zealand joined us in solidarity, a powerful moment of connection and sisterhood.

✨ A Call to Action! Safety Cannot Wait!
Women and children in Gapuwiyak urgently need local, culturally-led crisis accommodation. Since 2022, GWS has run Miyalkku Mulka Wäŋa providing education, healing, outreach, and case management without a local shelter.
A suitable building sits mostly empty, yet government processes continue to delay action. With 1 in 10 people in Gapuwiyak currently receiving outreach support, the need is immediate.

GWS will continue to stand strong and advocate for safety on Country. Your voices matter.
