Flashback Friday @ Pivot City, featuring Hendersons, circa 1954 🚋

Does anyone remember trams in Geelong? It’s hard to imagine them on Melbourne Rd!

According to the internet, “the expanding industrial area of North Geelong” (hello 👋🏼 Fed Mills) received its tramway service in July, 1928. In the wartime era, rations on petrol made trams an ideal mode of transport, state wide.

However, in 1949, H.H. Bell Jnr prepared a report for the Geelong City Council which deemed the trams obsolete , and that they could not be run profitably in a city with only 52,000 people. They were also identified as “Australia’s number one road menace” and 16 times more likely to be involved in an accident than motor vehicles.

In 1955 the Liberal State Govt decided that trams should be replaced by buses as soon as possible, and the last train ran in Geelong in 1956.
