7:09pm – Tossed In, Gladstone Central

Been meaning to try this place for a while and thought there was no better time than pre-State of Origin. They’re located in Gladstone Square in the Valley, between Rosscos and the Sushi Train.

I went with the Tossed In Burrito, which comes with chicken, corn chips, rice, cheese, avocado, black beans and burger sauce.

I ordered at 7:05pm and was given a ticket number like you’d see at a fish and chip shop. The burrito was in my hand by 7:09pm, indicating a 4-minute wait time.

Service – 10/10
Fantastic. Ordered, received a ticket, waited, and then paid at the counter when the meal was ready. Really impressed by this.

Value – 8.75/10
This came in at $17.50. The size was substantial and reminded me a bit of Zambrero in Rocky, being wrapped in foil and having a certain girth to it. Size-wise, it was about 20% bigger than GYG.

Food – 9/10
This was excellent. All the flavours worked together perfectly. There was about half a roast chicken shredded through it with a beautiful lemon-style seasoning. The salads were fresh, there was a good amount of cheese and avocado, and it was all wrapped in a warm tortilla. It held together well and every bite had an even consistency of ingredients.

Overall – 9.25/10
I’m really impressed by this whole experience. For a place I haven’t heard many reviews on, this should be a staple lunch option for anyone in and around the city. I’ll definitely be back and trying more of the menu. The service was up there with the best I’ve had since starting these reviews, and the value is very good considering the large portion size.

Gladstone Food Reviews
6.44pm Auckland House, Gladstone Central

Ordered at the counter at 6.15pm, with the meal arriving at 6.44pm, indicating a 29-minute wait time.

Went with an old favourite: the 350g rump steak with mash, vegetables and Diane sauce. I’m a big fan of this place but have only eaten here a handful of times, with my last visit being a few years ago now, so I’d been looking forward to this one for a while. I was joined by my visiting valuer colleagues. Between the group we ordered chicken wings and cheese & bacon bread for entrees, a selection of alcoholic beverages, and for mains two chicken parmigianas, another rump steak and a half rack of ribs. Atmosphere-wise, I reckon it’s right up there with the Queens as one of the top two venues in Gladstone.

Service – 8.5/10
Ordered at the counter and was given a table number along with my five-strong entourage. Grabbed a jug of water from the counter and settled in.

Value – 8.5/10
The meal came in at $41, which I think is pretty reasonable for the quality on offer.

Chicken Wings – 8/10
Fried and served with a sriracha sauce and ranch. Had a few of these in the lead-up to the main and they were a very good start to the meal.

Cheese & Bacon Bread – 7/10
Slightly dogged, but came with a decent amount of bacon and a good cheese pull.

Steak – 9/10
A cut above most of the other steaks I’ve had around town recently. Good char, perfectly cooked and excellent quality. I rate this highly.

Mash – 8/10
Creamy, soft and consistent texture throughout.

Vegetables – 8/10
Well steamed and included cauliflower, slightly crunchy carrots and marginally overcooked beans.

Sauce – 6/10
This was much closer to a gravy than a Diane sauce in my opinion. A member of my entourage ordered the same and agreed with the sentiment. That said, the portion size was very generous and among the best in the market.

Overall – 8.5/10
A really good experience overall, with great ambience and an amazing live singer performing on the night. The steak itself is top tier and I feel you’d be hard-pressed to find better in Central Queensland. The rest of the meal was well above average and comfortably positioned in the upper quartile of the market.

Today Opteon held its annual EOFY party at the Gladstone Bowls Club, with valuers from Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Maryborough and Hervey Bay in attendance. We were treated to charcuterie platters, fruit platters (which I skipped entirely), and a stacked sandwich board, with jugs of beer and Coke Zero also on offer.

It was great to catch up with colleagues and discuss regional property market trends. I’m fortunate to work alongside a hugely experienced team of valuers across the Central Queensland and Wide Bay regions.

Gladstone Food Reviews
7.31pm The Loaded Spud Van, Hanson Road, Gladstone Central

Ordered at 7:29pm and the meal was ready in just 81 seconds, which was about the same amount of time it took me to drive home.

I originally went for the Honey Mustard Chicken Spud, however staff advised it had sold out and recommended the Sweet Chilli Chicken Alfredo Spud instead. Total cost came to $25.35 including the EFTPOS surcharge.

Service – 8/10

The staff were very friendly and hospitable, providing a good recommendation when my first choice wasn’t available. One thing to note is that the menu and pricing differ from what is shown on their page.

There is also a self-serve station beside the counter with tomato, BBQ, chilli, chipotle and aioli sauces, along with a selection of seasonings.

Price – 5/10

At $25.35, this missed the mark for me. I was expecting a container roughly twice the size for that price point. There was a decent serving of chicken, probably around 150g, but from a value perspective it sits towards the lower end of the market compared to other venues I’ve reviewed. Given the lower overheads typically associated with a food truck, I expected a bit more.

Food – 7.25/10

The dish was essentially chicken Alfredo pasta served over a very well-cooked baked potato. The chicken breast was moist, the fettuccine was slightly overcooked, and the sauce was silky and consistent with a traditional Alfredo. There was plenty of cheese, with a strong cheese pull throughout.

Despite the name, I couldn’t pick up much sweet chilli or chilli flavour. The standout was definitely the potato itself — steaming hot, perfectly cooked and finished with a crispy skin.

Overall – 6.75/10

It’s worth a try if budget isn’t a major concern, although next time I’d probably opt for one of the more meat-heavy options such as the Kilo Challenger, which appears to offer stronger value.

The staff were excellent and set a new record for the fastest service I’ve experienced since starting these reviews. Credit also to them for operating on Hanson Road during winter — it’s a pretty lonely stretch of road after dark, with not much else happening for a good kilometre and a half in either direction.

This morning I attended the Business Diversification and Networking Breakfast, supported by the Gladstone Engineering Alliance and Gladstone Regional Council.

There was a strong crowd of around 50 attendees for the 7:30am start, with breakfast included.

The panel featured:

* Doug Forbes – Storage Town and medium-density property development
* Terri Ann Shepherd – BKR Group, General Manager
* Patrick Fordyce – COO, Berg Engineering

I particularly enjoyed hearing Doug’s story and his vast international experience in banking and commercial real estate. One of the key takeaways for me was the importance of diversifying assets and businesses so you can redeploy into new opportunities when market conditions become challenging.

Doug shared an example of redeveloping large industrial sheds in South Trees into 18 smaller tenancies to better meet changing tenant demand. Many smaller businesses can afford lower rents and often require more flexible lease terms than larger companies. A common theme across all speakers was resilience, adaptability, and finding solutions to customer problems.

Thanks to the Gladstone Engineering Alliance and Gladstone Regional Council for putting on this valuable free event.

6:55pm – Ban Thai Bar & Restaurant, Gladstone Central

Tonight’s review is coming from Ban Thai on Goondoon Street. This is my first time here, but I’m no stranger to Thai food and consider it one of my favourite cuisines. I’ve been to all the other Thai restaurants and vans in town and overall consider Gladstone to have a very high standard when it comes to Thai food.

I ordered at 6:43pm and my meal arrived at 6:55pm, indicating a 12-minute wait time. I went with the Chicken Sukiyaki with extra chicken, breaking a sequence of 28 straight orders of Chicken Pad Thai at Thai establishments.

Service – 10/10

I was greeted at the door and exclaimed “ขอโต๊ะหนึ่งที่ครับ!” — a phrase meaning “table for one please” that I picked up and used frequently during my travels to Bangkok in 2019. Service here was easily top three since I’ve been reviewing places. Quick ordering, the choice of any table, and food delivered in just 12 minutes. Very, very good.

Value – 7/10

With the extra chicken, this came to $32.90, up from $25.90 for the standard portion. There was plenty of chicken, so I think that’s fair, although there are better value offerings around town.

Food – 8/10

As mentioned, there was plenty of chicken. A light soy-based sauce complemented the vermicelli noodles along with bok choy, celery and egg. Broccoli was an omission from what was described on the menu. The flavour profile was very much what you would expect from a Japanese-style sukiyaki, making for a lighter alternative to some of the richer Thai dishes on offer.

Overall – 8.25/10

I enjoyed the alfresco dining and ambience of the venue, particularly the electronic fireplace which added to the atmosphere. Ban Thai delivered a quality dining experience with excellent service, a relaxed setting and a generous serving of chicken. I’ll certainly be back to continue exploring the menu.

Let me know in the comments - what’s your favourite Glady Thai joint and what do you usually order?
