WHAT DOES THE SRV MEAN FOR A TYPICAL RESIDENTIAL RATEPAYER?

There has been a lot of discussion about percentages, but what matters to most households is understanding the actual dollar impact.

Importantly, the Special Rate Variation (SRV) applies only to the general rates component of your rates notice. It does not apply to water, sewer, waste or other annual charges.

As an example, if a residential property currently pays $700 per year in general rates, the first year increase of 21.5% would equate to:

๐Ÿก Current annual general rate: $700

๐Ÿ“ˆ 2026/27 increase (21.5%): $150.50

โœ… New annual general rate: $850.50

Broken down further, that increase is approximately:

โ€ข $2.89 per week
โ€ข $12.54 per month
โ€ข $37.63 per quarter

Another example for year 1:

๐Ÿก Current annual general rate: $2,300

๐Ÿ“ˆ 2026/27 increase (21.5%): $494.50

โœ… New annual general rate: $2,794.50

Broken down further, that increase is approximately:

โ€ข $9.51 per week
โ€ข $41.21 per month
โ€ข $123.63 per quarter

Whilst we appreciate that any increase is not wanted, it is important to understand the actual dollar impact rather than just the headline percentage.

The SRV was approved by IPART following an extensive consultation process and independent assessment. The additional revenue will help Council address long-term financial sustainability challenges, maintain essential services, renew ageing infrastructure, and reduce the risk of future service reductions.

As councillors, we understand that nobody welcomes higher rates. However, we also have a responsibility to ensure our community continues to receive the roads, bridges, parks, libraries, sporting facilities, waste services and community infrastructure that residents rely on every day.

The reality is that doing nothing also comes at a cost. Without action, councils face increasing pressure on services, infrastructure maintenance and financial sustainability.

Understanding the facts and the actual dollar impact is an important part of this conversation as we work together to secure the long-term future of Glen Innes Severn.
