What is the Disability Reference Group?
Itβs a group of people:
β’ from the community
β’ who work for the Department of Justice
The group helps us:
β’ Make our workplaces and services welcoming to everyone
β’ Make things easier for everyone to access and use
β’ Make sure everyone is treated fairly
What does the group do?
The group gives advice to help with:
β’ The Disability Action Plan
β’ The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy 2023β2026
Who can join?
We want to hear from people in Tasmania who are:
β’ People with disability
β’ Carers, family members, or supporters of people with disability
β’ Advocates, organisations or community members who speak up for or support people with disability
β’ People with knowledge or experience about disability β even if itβs not from formal training
What do members need to do?
β’ Go to a 1.5 hour meeting every 4 months
β’ Read some short materials before each meeting
β’ Be part of the group for 12 months
β’ Give helpful advice and feedback to make things better for people with disability
What will the group talk about?
Topics may include:
β’ Fair hiring and job support
β’ Positive workplace culture (safe, respectful places to work)
β’ Clear communication about disability
β’ Giving feedback on new laws
β’ Better workplace adjustments and policies
β’ Making buildings, websites, and information easier to access
Remuneration
β’ Remuneration is available to community members who are participating in a personal capacity. This recognises the invaluable expertise, lived experience, and time committed to informing the Departmentβs work and shaping inclusive, community-informed policies and programs.
