1st major project complete. What a great feeling, knowing that my proofreading and editing skills are such a valuable commodity to people outside the classroom. Rough drafts for high school students are one thing, PHDs are another story - challenging but so exciting too.

Editing my first thesis is proving a really exciting challenge. If you know someone who might need some help with their PHD, Masters or Honours thesis - especially if it is law related - they need my details. I hadn't realised the point of difference I could offer, having a Law degree, until I started on this project - the terminology alone plus the concepts, require a legal background that most editors would not have. So, if you know anyone who might benefit from my skills - please send them my way.

Today I spent a few minutes reading listings in the front window of a local real estate agent. I found four blatantly obvious typos, three apostrophes missing and a word unnecessarily divided into two. Why anyone would choose to promote their services so publicly without proofreading is hard to fathom. Important publications need to be CHECKED OVER if you want people to take you and your business seriously.

Sometimes people don't realise how they might benefit from the services of an editor/proofreader. For example, do you know someone writing selection criteria for their job application? Or perhaps someone who has spent months painstakingly pouring over their thesis? An objective, keen eye checking over such important documents is critical - don't lose points with your target audience simply because you didn't fine-tune all your hard work.

Editing? Proofreading? What's the difference? In simplest terms, editing means that I can give you advice on the structure, layout and content of your document. Proofreading is a final check of the mechanics of writing - spelling, punctuation, grammar. Putting yourself or your business out there without checking it over, may well mean underselling what you have to offer. So, if you think you would benefit from some feedback on your writing, contact me and we can discuss how I might be able to help maximise the impact of your documents.

As someone who has spent many years reading rough drafts and offering feedback to students, I have seen first-hand that presentation of an error-free document goes a long way in terms of giving the best possible impression. I know that I am not alone either in the fact that I will judge, rightly or wrongly, a business if their menu, signage or advertising is full of spelling and/or grammatical errors. There are so many different situations in which an individual person or business would benefit from an objective eye looking over their documents before they are published. This is where I step in. As a teacher of 17 years and someone who has also secured a Bachelor of Arts/Laws (hons) and a Certificate in Editing and Proofreading, I can offer you that final check to ensure you are portraying yourself or your business in the best possible way. So whether you are writing a job application, an essay for uni, a new menu for your cafe or a book, make sure that you - Check It Over.
