🐓 Breed Highlight — Brahmas 🐓

A true heritage breed, Brahmas are known as the “gentle giants” of the chicken world. With their impressive size, adorable feathered feet, and distinctive eagle brows, they have a bold, majestic look that’s hard to miss.

Originally developed for colder climates, Brahmas are exceptionally cold hardy, making them especially well suited to areas like Goulburn. They’re reliable winter layers too, continuing to produce when many other breeds slow down.

Despite their huge size, Brahmas are famously calm, gentle birds and are often wonderful with children, making them a favourite for family flocks.

Heritage birds with size, beauty, and personality. Why not have these stunning layers in your flock!

*Please note our three colour varieties are currently free ranging together being off season, as you can see in this photo, so all chicks will be mix coloured. When the breeding season starts again we will separate the breeds and be able to offer the different colour varieties. :) *

Loving my rainbow eggs this season. All the hard work last year planning and hatching is paying off! Aren't these colours and speckles just gorgeous.

Easter Egger and Olive Egger chicks available. Hatched from blue, green and olive eggs, should lay the same. Roosters were Araucana and Marans. Unsexed and will require heat. 15 each, pickup Carrick.

Marans pen today, they just keep getting better and better! Darker and darker, and more spots this time. Isn't it gorgeous? I'll put it in the incubator for sure!

This is a great explanation of the blue/black/splash genetics. I have this in my silver, blue laced silver and splash laced silver Wyandottes. When you buy fertile eggs from this pen, you will get a mix of these three gorgeous colours, and here is why! I keep a blue laced silver roo over silver, blue laced silver and splash laced silver girls, to give all three colours.

The breeding of Blue…

The Blue gene is a dilution gene. It doesn’t create blue from nothing, it lightens black pigment. So if a chicken is genetically black, the Blue gene softens it into grey blue tones. Blue is a dominant gene, meaning you have to have a Blue bird to start with.

What is Splash?
Splash is what happens when a chick gets two copies of the Blue gene.
Instead of blue, the pigment is diluted even further into a very light, patchy colour.

Blue is not breeding true like black or white.
That’s why in Blue breeding pens you will get a mix of Black, Blue and Splash offspring. They all belong to the same genetic colour family.

The breeding of Blue applies to all breeds of chickens, including patterned birds where Black, Blue or Splash is present.

Something exciting is happening at Snowgum Views! The fence panels for our new runs are starting to arrive. It will be a big few weeks of construction, but I can't wait till all our breeding pens are up and running! I'll be focusing on brahmas, Wyandottes and rainbow eggs, but if I have a few spare pens, what are some breeds you would love to have available?
