Australia’s Beef Sector Is Smashing Records in 2026!

For producers across Gunnedah and North West NSW, the livestock market is sending a clear signal: big opportunities lie ahead.

According to MLA’s latest projections, national beef production is set to cross 3 million tonnes for the first time in history, all while keeping our national breeding herd stronger and more resilient than ever.

Here’s a quick taste of what’s driving the surge:
✅ Higher Carcase Weights: Averaging a record 313kg across the board

✅ Record Feedlot Output: Annual turn-off topping 4 million head

✅ Global Demand: U.S. herd numbers at 75-year lows are keeping Aussie beef front and center

Gunnedah Cattle Market Report | Tuesday, 22nd September

A slightly smaller yarding in Gunnedah this week with 3,188 head yarded. Quality held up fairly well, dominated primarily by yearling and feeder types, though all grades were represented.

All major processors and feedlot buyers were in attendance, but we did see buyer demand pulling back, leading to a much softer market across the board.

Here’s the breakdown:

▪️ Prime Yearling Trade: Made 382c to 498c/kg.

▪️ Feeder Steers: Under 400kg fell 25c, selling from 460c to 560c/kg. Feeder steers over 400kg were considerably cheaper, making 464c to 558c/kg (avg 526c/kg).

▪️ Feeder Heifers: Eased 30c–40c across all weights, selling from 360c to 492c/kg.

▪️ Restocker Cattle: Light steers dropped 40c to make 474c to 564c/kg (avg 526c/kg). Light restocker heifers made 350c to 478c/kg (avg 416c/kg).

▪️ Grown Cattle: Prime grown cattle to processors sold from 364c to 432c/kg.

▪️ Cows: Eased 25c–30c. 2 scores made 330c–360c/kg; 3 scores made 348c–376c/kg; prime heavy 4 score cows reached 366c–410c/kg.

▪️ Bulls: Best of the heavy bulls topped at 394c/kg.

Gunnedah Fat Cattle Sale Market Report Summary - 15th September

With warmer weather hitting the region, we saw a surge in supply at Gunnedah this week, pushing overall numbers to 3,523 head. It was a fair-quality, all-round yarding with all major buyers present, resulting in an overall softer market.

✅Market Breakdown

Yearling Steers (Feed > 400kg): Held strong! Buyers continue to chase weight, pushing prices 5c dearer to make 480c – 586c/kg (avg 557c/kg).
Yearling Steers (Feed < 400kg): Eased 30c cheaper, ranging 480c – 606c/kg.
Yearling Heifers (Feed): Settled 30c+ cheaper, selling from 410c – 518c/kg (avg 483c/kg).
Prime Yearling (Trade): Solid trade interest, fetching 420c – 488c/kg.
Restocker Cattle: Considerably cheaper on light lines. Steers made 519c – 656c/kg, while heifers brought 454c – 560c/kg.
Prime Grown Cattle: Processors saw prime grown cattle top out at 456c/kg.

Cow Market:
2 Score: 366c – 384c/kg
3 Score: 380c – 398c/kg
4 Score (Prime Heavy): 398c – 416c/kg

Heavy Bulls: Best of the heavy bulls reached 417c/kg.
