The first stage of the Ella Bay Development will be the southern Little Cove Resort which will be the ultimate in seclusion and five star opulence required to make it a destination in its' own right.

The design of the resort capitalises on the unique attributes of the site. Buildings will be single storey with pitched roofs so that they sit comfortably below the tree line. The form is de-centralised to further reduce the impact of the buildings on the site and enable all suites to feel like they are captured "within the rainforest".

The Central Facilities are separated into two pavilions comprising of the Arrival pavilion and the Entertainment pavilion Resort suites are either located in private enclaves each with their own private plunge pool and rainforest gardens providing the ultimate in seclusion and exclusivity, or overlook the main swimming lagoons or reflecting ponds to provide a cool, tranquil setting to the resort.

A timber bridge is also used in the central axis of the resort leading the view from the porte-cochere to the beach in a strong visual connection, forming the focus of the resort. The architectural style of the resort is best described as 'tropical modern'. It will blend the essential ingredients of tropical design - wide roof overhangs, verandahs, open air design, shutters and proximity to cooling water pools - with clean, modern design elements.

There will be subtle references to traditional North Queensland style architectural in the roof forms, and to more Asian resort style in the courtyard walls and privacy gardens,.

The images contained in this report provide a guide to the intended style - simplicity of form with the essential elements of shade, open-ness and coolness, to provide a relaxed yet sophisticated ambience. Colours will be light to contrast with the lush greens and tropical colours of the landscape, and to provide freshness and light to the interior spaces.

Tropical North Queensland hasn’t seen a development opportunity like Ella Bay’s integrated resort in 25 years. During that time, the composition and aspirations of international and interstate visitors to Queensland and Australia has changed dramatically.
Ella Bay provides an ideal opportunity to reshape and tailor the visitor experience to the Tropical North and Great Barrier Reef with the new wave of eco-aware luxury tourist and residents.

The site is currently a large rural property which has been cleared for agriculture since the early 1900’s. The site has an esplanade located along the foreshore which enjoys extensive beach frontage of 3 km to the Coral Sea. The site rises gently to the west where it shares a common boundary with the Ella Bay National Park, which also borders the property to the north and, in part, to the south. The Ella Bay National Park is included in the Wet Tropics World Heritage area.
