The Australian Government recognises the importance of connectivity in a globalised world. The Western Sydney Airport will be an international gateway for the region, ensuring we improve our links with emerging economies and deliver trade, skilled jobs and economic growth. An airport would be a transformative employment generating project for Western Sydney. It is an opportunity to deliver jobs, skills and growth to the local community of Western Sydney, setting the foundations for long-term, sustainable growth.

In order to get to work, approximately 30 per cent of workers living in Western Sydney currently commute outside the region. Investment in key infrastructure
will generate jobs in Western Sydney, helping to close the jobs deficit. These jobs will provide opportunities for Western Sydney residents to work closer to home,
allowing them to spend less time commuting and improve their quality of life.

Sydney is currently experiencing unprecedented growth across all sectors, driven primarily by population growth. With no signs of slowing, this growth has had a significant effect on the property market and the need for wide spread
infrastructure upgrades.

As a region of two million people, Western Sydney has nine percent of Australia’s population and is the country’s third largest economy. The NSW Government is investigating opportunities for new jobs, homes and services around the planned Western Sydney Airport. The new Western Sydney Priority Growth Area will provide local people with better access to jobs within and around the airport, as well as infrastructure and services for local residents. The Department will work closely with Liverpool City Council and Penrith City Council to prepare a draft Land Use and Infrastructure Strategy. This will guide new infrastructure investment, identify new homes and jobs close to transport, and coordinate services in the area.

The Western Sydney Priority Growth Area will also benefit from the $3.6 billion road investment program, the extension of the South West Rail Link from Leppington to St Mary's, and the Outer Sydney Orbital. A Western Sydney Airport, as a new gateway to Australia and to NSW, should represent international best practice in terms of innovation and sustainability.
