Today is the 31st anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander flag, which was presented on 29 May 1992 at the sixth Torres Strait Cultural Festival.

The flag was designed by Bernard Namok and was the winning entry in a design competition. The green panels represent the land, the blue represents the sea and the black lines represent the people of the Torres Strait. The centre of the flag also features a white dhari, a dancer’s headdress, representing Torres Strait Islander culture.
