It's a no brainer really. Getting the existing conditions plan completed so that you can effectively plan and quote the works accurately is the first step in developing the concept plan. Really anything that triggers a building permit, means that drawings need to be done.

Why is it hard though? I know that as a small business, I need to network and build those relationships, and that takes time, but realistically what takes a design company 14 hours to measure a building I can scan in around 2-3 hours, and provide you with a digital twin walkthrough

To all the architects and professional designers out there, today I was at the Frankston City Council building expo, helping Tara Vandeligt on the Building Dreams. Mornington Peninsula stand

It was a great event, and the council team was really good to work with.

For a networking event I met some great people there, shared ideas, possible add on solutions.

The one comment that stood out to me mostly was "it's a no brainer, isn't it, to get the building measurements done before the design process starts"

So with the professionals what is the hard part, is it relationship thingy, trust on the dimensional accuracy (I am provind to 99% accuracy), what is it?

As you know, measuring a site up takes a bit of time, running around with your laser tape, your wheel, and or tape measure. How many hours would you spend on site, measuring the space, checking the information, taking photographs?

And if you miss a dimension, did you have to go back to site, remeasure and photograph it all? How much extra time was that.

Lastly on the drawings, how long did it take you to build your drawing up? A week, two weeks?

What if you could scan a space like the plan above, in 1-1.5 hrs, and convert the space to drawings (Revit and/or 2dAutoCAD DWGs) and have them back within a week?

Food for thought - what is the building design process?

I have found that each designer/architect all have a different way of thinking about the process. Typically driven by what fees they can charge for each stage and what the client is willing to pay.

In essence however, no matter what process you use, its all comes down to setting the right foundation, as in architecture and construction, every decision is only as good as the site information it’s built on.

Yet too many projects still begin with assumptions, outdated drawings, or “near enough” measurements — and the downstream impact is huge: design errors, approval delays, cost blowouts, and construction disputes.

So in your process you should ensure that you have covered off and allowed for the most critical step - the Site Measure.

Just finished a project in Caulfield north
Mid century modern unit, in original condition. Commissioned by Architect Anna Power for an a proposed renovation.
What I really liked about the space, was the entrance foyer, something you don’t get so often homes of today. The unit has all the original features, including a jack and jill shower.
This is a plan view looks like once it’s been scanned and the info has been checked.
This is now progressing to Cad drawings
This scan took just over an hour to finish, inside and out.

Imagine if you were an architect, and you had to measure this space with all the nooks and crannies, and then draw it all up. How much time and cost could you save?
