“What the bloody hell is the agronomist doing this afternoon?” 🤨🌽

A fair question from the Elders Maffra team after walking in on Emma putting coloured zip ties on a length of chain.

We have questions. Several, actually.

Apparently, it’s all part of preparing to plant a population wheel at our dryland maize trial out at Rosedale.

She assures us there’s a method to the madness.

For the time being, we still have questions. 😂

🌱 Summer lawns start here!

After last week’s huge rains, give your lawn a little love and get it back looking amazing for summer! ☀️

DLF Turfwise Turf Oasis seed blend is back in stock at Elders Maffra in 5 kg and 25 kg bags—perfect for patching bare spots or getting a fresh lawn underway.

👩‍🌾 Agro Emma’s tip: Don’t forget to feed your grass! Phosphorus (P) supports root development when establishing new grass, while nitrogen 👎 can support recovery and fresh growth after the root damage—or “root pruning”—caused by waterlogging. Let the ground drain before applying fertiliser.

Come in and talk to the Elders Maffra team about seed and fertiliser to get your lawn summer-ready! 🌿

🏉 WHAT A GRAND FINAL! 🏆

What a game between Brisbane and Fremantle on the weekend! A cracking contest right until the final siren, with the Lions pulling off an incredible comeback to sn**ch a 7-point win in one of the most dramatic finishes we’ve seen.

Congratulations to Kim Appleton who has tipped the correct margin and has won the Nufarm Sherrin football.

Thanks to everyone who had a crack — and what a game to finish it off with!

So, if we’ve settled on a target of around 10 tonnes of dry matter per hectare, the next question is: how are we actually going to feed that crop?

We know what a conventional maize fertiliser program might look like, but for a dryland crop where we’re trying to keep the economics realistic, there are some other options worth considering.

So we’re going to have a look at the conventional approach versus some alternative fertiliser strategies — what each option supplies, what it costs, and ultimately whether we can meet the nutritional requirements of a 10-tonne crop without spending money where we don’t need to.

24/09/2026

We’re back talking dryland maize, and this time we’re getting into yield targets and fertiliser.

Around here, under irrigation, we’d commonly be targeting somewhere around 25 tonnes of dry matter per hectare from a maize crop. But this is dryland, so we need to be realistic about what our available moisture can actually support.

For this trial, we’re working around a target of 10 tonnes of dry matter per hectare. From there, we can work backwards: what nutrients does a 10-tonne maize crop actually require, what can the soil already supply, and what do we need to add as fertiliser?

The aim isn’t to fertilise it like a 25-tonne irrigated crop and hope for the best. It’s about matching our inputs to a realistic dryland yield target, while making sure that if we do get the season, nutrition isn’t what holds the crop back.
