Goose hatching experts, help. Bruce has clocked off.
Bruce is the mum. We thought she was a he. The name stuck, and honestly she wears it better than most blokes.
Bruce hatched one gosling on Monday. From what I can find, a goose will often leave the late eggs around 48 hours so she can eat and get the hatched baby to water. That may be this.
Bruce sat for about two and a half days after that first hatch. We checked a few times a day. Today, around 12–1 pm, she left. We gave her an hour. No sign of her. She was off with the gander and the new baby, job apparently done. First family vacation 🛬
We candled the rest. Ten were rotten. Two were alive and nearly cold 🥶. Both moving, both making sounds when held against your eart, beak visible in the air cell. No hole in the shell. The mark you can see is dirt, not a pip. We moved those two into the incubator.
Small problem. There is already a fresh batch in there, set Monday, about two and a half days old. Geese want hatch humidity 85%. New eggs want about 55%. We have split it at 70% for less than 24 hours, on the basis one night will not bother the chicken eggs.
What I do not know is how long these two have been breathing the air cell. We only saw the beak at 1 pm. Bruce buggered off Aprox just before 12pm
Tonight they are still wobbling (9pm), small wobbles , not proper peeping.
When would you help?
