INNIS NATIONAL PARK - Stop 4

Pondalowie Bay, is a stunning stretch of coastline known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life.

The bay is a popular destination for surfers, thanks to its consistent swell and the powerful breaks along the southern coast.

With the backdrop of rugged sand dunes and coastal bushland, Pondalowie offers a natural escape for adventurers and those seeking to explore the untouched beauty of South Australia.

The bay’s sheltered waters also make it a favored spot for fishing, with anglers targeting species like whiting, salmon, and mullet.

Beyond its recreational appeal, Pondalowie Bay is also a haven for wildlife.

The area is home to a variety of bird species, including seabirds and migratory shorebirds, making it a perfect spot for birdwatching.

The nearby islands, visible from the shore, are important breeding grounds for seals and seabirds, further highlighting the ecological richness of the region.

Visitors to Pondalowie can enjoy a range of activities, from bushwalking along coastal trails to camping at nearby sites, immersing themselves in the natural beauty of Innes National Park.

The bay’s unspoiled charm and diverse wildlife make it a cherished destination for both locals and tourists.

INNIS NATIONAL PARK - Stop 3

Cape Spencer Lighthouse, is a vital navigational beacon overlooking the often treacherous waters of Investigator Strait and the Southern Ocean.

The current lighthouse, built in 1975, stands atop rugged limestone cliffs, offering sweeping views of the coastline and the surrounding ocean.

Its strategic location helps guide ships safely past the hazardous reefs and rocky outcrops that line this part of the coast, an area notorious for shipwrecks in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

While the original lighthouse keeper's quarters have long since disappeared, the automated light continues to serve as a crucial safeguard for maritime traffic.

Beyond its practical function, Cape Spencer Lighthouse is also a popular destination for visitors to Innes National Park.

The short walk to the lighthouse provides stunning panoramic views of Kangaroo Island, nearby Althorpe Island, and the dramatic cliffs that characterize this wild stretch of coastline.

The windswept beauty of the area, combined with the rich history of maritime exploration and shipwrecks, creates an atmospheric experience for travelers.

For many, the lighthouse stands as a symbol of resilience, both of the seafarers who once braved these waters and of the natural environment that continues to thrive in this remote corner of South Australia.

INNIS NATIONAL PARK - Stop 2

The wreck of the *Ethel*, a historic shipwreck located within Innes National Park, offers a haunting glimpse into the region’s maritime past.

The *Ethel*, a three-masted iron barque, met its fate during a fierce storm in 1904 while en route to South Africa.

Caught in treacherous conditions, the vessel ran aground on the rugged coastline near Cape Spencer.

Although the crew survived, the ship was unable to be salvaged, and its skeletal remains have since been a permanent fixture of the coastline.

Over time, the shifting sands of the beach have revealed and concealed parts of the wreck, with the remains of the hull often visible depending on weather conditions.

Today, the *Ethel* wreck is a popular attraction for visitors to Innes National Park.

The site, easily accessible via a short walk from the park’s coastal trails, offers a striking contrast between the rusted remains of the ship and the pristine natural surroundings.

The wreck serves as a reminder of the dangers that once faced mariners navigating these treacherous waters, where unpredictable weather and rocky shores claimed many vessels.

The eerie beauty of the site, combined with its historical significance, makes it a must-visit for history buffs, photographers, and nature lovers exploring the park.

INNIS NATIONAL PARK - Stop 1.
Stenhouse Bay Jetty.

Built in the early 1900s, the jetty was primarily used for shipping gypsum, a mineral mined from the nearby Inneston area.

The jetty was once a bustling hub of activity, with ships regularly transporting gypsum to Adelaide and beyond for use in plaster and cement.

Today, it stands as a reminder of South Australia's industrial past, blending seamlessly with the natural beauty of Innes National Park, where it is situated.

While no longer used for commercial purposes, the Stenhouse Bay Jetty remains a popular destination for visitors, especially those interested in fishing, photography, or simply taking in the scenic coastal views.

The clear waters surrounding the jetty are rich in marine life, making it a favored spot for anglers casting for whiting, squid, and other fish.

The jetty’s rugged charm, combined with the surrounding limestone cliffs and coastal bushland, creates a serene and picturesque setting that appeals to both locals and tourists.

Its cultural and historical significance, along with its recreational appeal, make it an enduring landmark in South Australia's coastal landscape.
