Termite swarms are common this time of year on the Sunshine Coast. Warm, humid weather after rain gets them moving.
If you see winged insects around the house in the evening, especially near lights, look closely. Termites and flying ants get mixed up all the time.
Termites: straight antennae, two pairs of equal length wings, thick waist.
Flying ants: bent antennae, uneven wing lengths, pinched waist.
Worth knowing the swarmers themselves alates don’t eat timber. Their only job is to find a mate and start a new colony. It’s the workers back in the colony doing the damage.
A swarm doesn’t always mean an active infestation in your home, but it’s a sign termites are active close by. Worth getting a professional inspection if you’re unsure.
