Developing with Smeaton.

Before plans were drawn, we spent time walking around paddocks and the local streets, noticing the quiet patterns of life. The grain of old timber, the wide skies, the way fences lean after decades of weather.

Our projects begin here - in observation. Rooted not just in landscape, but in memory. Built to feel part of what already exists.

Every detail starts with a question.

This early sketch for our Clyde Street development captures the back-and-forth of designing for light, orientation, and everyday flow: balancing constraints with possibility.

It’s messy, iterative, and exactly how we like it.

On Dover Street, the design speaks to place. The heritage brick streetscape inspired the lower podium, grounding the building in its context while shaping a thoughtful material language.

This connection between past and present was brought to life in collaboration with Fieldwork Architects

Every detail considered, every choice made to belong.

Daylesford isn’t just a destination — it’s a community woven by local flavour, shared tables, and welcoming spaces. Around our Smeaton development, a few institutions have quietly become part of the daily rhythm.

Cliffy’s Café: A bright pocket of joy — natural light, home‑baked treats, friendly baristas. Morning coffees here smell like butter and slow mornings; the kind people linger in.

The Commercial Hotel: Sitting at the heart of town, with an old‑school pub feel and live music nights. It’s where community meets in laughter, pint glasses and comfort.

The Royal Hotel: Wood‑panelled pub rooms, open fireplaces, and a menu that speaks to season. It’s where neighbours drop in — for Friday-night drinks, long lunches, or catching up over hearty fare.

For future residents of Smeaton, these aren’t just places to visit. They’re the backdrop to weekends, meeting points for friends, and spaces that stitch together the everyday.

In Part I, we looked at the timber that defines Smeaton’s streets - markers of a quiet, enduring way of building.

Now, we’re continuing that story.

In Greenlaw House at Mount Martha, natural timber products like Victorian Ash help soften the form: bringing warmth, rhythm, and tactility to a coastal setting.

At Freeform, we set out to challenge the expectations of what multi-functional can feel like.

Working with Watson Young Architects, the vision was clear: more light, more softness, more green. A palette grounded in coastal tones - concrete, white brick, and timber designed to age gently in place.

This is collaboration at its best - designing spaces that don’t just work now, but settle in over time.

October’s material story, Board by Board, travels to Smeaton - a country town where timber tells its story through patina, grain, and time. Long before it became an architectural statement, timber was the vernacular response to climate, craft, and country living.

At our latest project in Smeaton, timber takes on many forms - not just in external finishes, but in the details that bridge past and present. Its warmth feels familiar, its strength speaks of care, and its natural rhythm sits softly against the rural landscape.

We’re drawn to materials with memory. Timber carries plenty.

In Dialogue - spotlighting the voices behind Gestalt’s projects.

At Clyde St, Kew, we worked with MA+Co, led by Principal Karen Alcock and Associate Director Rachael McNally. Their perspective and collaboration continue to shape spaces with depth, longevity, and care.

At Roseneath Street, the façade’s measured rhythm creates more than a striking profile - it offers privacy and softens the threshold between street and home.

Every gesture is considered not just for today, but for the life it will hold tomorrow.

At Clyde St, every material decision reflects both place and purpose. Brick was chosen not only for strength and sustainability, but for the way it mirrors the textures and rhythms of Kew.

Familiar yet enduring, it ensures the new development feels rooted in its environment - a continuation of the suburb’s story rather than a departure from it.

Developing with East Kew.

Before Clyde St took shape, we looked first to its surroundings - the textures of bark, the rhythm of leaves, the quiet familiarity of its streets. Our developments grow from these details, grounding new architecture in the life already here.

From blueprints to reality, every detail matters.

Behind the scenes of our process, care lives in the small moments: sawdust on the floor, tools at hand, decisions made with precision. These steps, though unseen in the final project, are part of the honesty that shapes every Gestalt space.
