Powderpost Beetles, Furniture Beetles or Termites? Knowing the difference matters.

One of the most common concerns we hear during timber pest inspections is whether evidence of timber damage means termites are present. The reality is that not all timber pests cause the same level of damage.

Powderpost Beetles typically attack the sapwood of hardwood timbers, commonly found in older homes where timber wasn't kiln-dried. While they can leave visible damage, they generally only consume the sapwood layer and will often die out once their food source is exhausted.

Furniture Beetles target softwood timbers and are often found in older homes, stumps, and floorboards. Their presence is commonly identified by distinctive squiggly tunnels within the timber. In many cases, repairs are limited to affected sections rather than major structural replacements.

Termites, however, are a completely different story. Unlike beetles, termites can cause extensive structural damage throughout a property and may require significant repairs if left undetected.

That's why a professional timber pest inspection is so important. Correctly identifying the pest is the first step in understanding the true risk to the property.

🏠 Understanding the difference between a major structural defect and a major building defect can make a huge difference when buying property — especially when contracts are involved.

A major structural defect generally affects the structural integrity of the home, such as:

✔️ Major subsidence
✔️ Structural movement
✔️ Roof frame failure
✔️ Compromised load-bearing elements

A major building defect may still be serious and costly to repair, but doesn’t always impact the structure itself.
For example, a leaking bathroom causing extensive moisture damage may be expensive to rectify, but may not meet the legal definition of a structural defect.
