Oakleigh results show keen buyer interest

RESULTS in Oakleigh have exceeded expectations while remaining in line with an upward market trend.
A prestige single-storey federation home at 17 Palmerston Grove sold for $2 million in a recent private sale, impressing the agent and seller.
“It was definitely a premier result,” said agent Gareth Apswoude of Ray White Oakleigh.
“We got $1.2 million for a similar site in Holland Court earlier this year.”
Strength in the market and the property’s location in the suburb’s sought-after “golden mile” contributed to the result for the four-bedroom home, Mr Apswoude said.
A family relocating from interstate snapped up the classy 898sq m property.
Buyers looking to secure a house in Oakleigh would need at least $900,000, “a huge change from five to six years ago”, Mr Apswoude said.
“It’s reasonably tightly held.”
FIVE BIDDERS
AN ART Deco weatherboard house at 7 George St, Oakleigh, soared above its reserve price to sell for $1.071 million on the weekend of August 1.
The three-bedroom 1930s home attracted five bidders among a crowd of about 75 people.

The previous week, a similar property in the same street sold for $945,000, said agent and auctioneer Chris Karantzas of Woodards Oakleigh.
Once described by a builder as a “polished up FJ Holden”, the property still had plenty of charm to complement its history, Mr Karantzas said.
The 543sq m block features baltic pine floorboards inside and a single garage out the back.
DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL
A RARE block of land at 4 Albert Ave, Oakleigh, sold for $2.938 million in a private sale.
Agent Jason Xi, of Ray White Oakleigh, said the 900sq m block had a planning permit and would be developed into 12 townhouses.
Land in Oakleigh is usually sold for about $2000 a square metre, but in this case the result was more than $3000 a square metre because of the development potential, Mr Xi said.
The planned townhouses will range from two to three bedrooms and are expected to be for sale off the plan in the next few weeks.

Greece explainer: what the financial crisis really means
Paul Nikakis might lose more than money in the fast-escalating Greek financial crisis.

He might lose his mother's legacy.

The Nikakis matriarch, Poppy, died in March this year.

The 84-year-old, who moved to Australia in the early 1950s, has left her two sons money and land back home.

But now that "substantial inheritance" might be lost forever.

Mr Nikakis said he and his brother, Kosta, had been trying to get the funds out of Greece since early this year. But they are beginning to expect the worst.

"I am very concerned," he said. "I am a bit depressed about it. I think probably it is not going to be good news."

Mr Nikakis said though Greece always had a poor record of managing the economy, the timing could not be worse for the family.

"It is not just about the money," he said. "It is about the legacy my mother has left. She'd be devastated if she knew what was going on,"

The Nikakis family is one of the many in Melbourne who are set to lose as Greece looks to default on its 242.8 billion euro debt and possibly exit the eurozone.

Katerina Pantopolis, who heads the representative office of the National Bank of Greece in Melbourne, said they had been inundated with inquiries from all over Australia.

"The phone calls have doubled," Ms Pantopolis said. "People are worried, they are coming to us for information. The phone has been ringing non-stop."

However, Ms Pantopolis and her two staff were themselves left in the dark with the Greek Prime Minister Alex Tsipras shutting all banks until next Monday.

"There are people who are travelling overseas, there are people who would like to know what is going to happen with their deposits," Ms Pantopolis said.

"I have tried to explain (to the callers) that I am not sure what is going to happen on Monday, if they will be able to withdraw a certain amount or the amount they are willing for."

Ms Pantopolis said it usually took up to one month for Australians to withdraw their money from their Greek accounts.

Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne president Bill Papastergiadis said there were about 300,000 people of Greek heritage in Melbourne. And the numbers have been growing.

"What we are seeing in the last few years is reverse migration, which hasn't happened for 40 years," Mr Papastergiadis said. "We have seen well over 10,000 people come back to Australia in the last two or three years because of the crises."

He said the Melbourne Greek community was "dismayed and disheartened" at the events unfolding in their homeland.

Greece will vote next Sunday on whether to accept a rescue package offered by Europe which will include more cuts to pay and pensions as well as an increase in taxes.

In Oakleigh, home to a large number of Melbourne's Greek community, debate raged across crowded cafes about the merits of staying in the European Union and the extent of the crises.

Dimitrios Balalas, who has two brothers in Greece, said the crises was being blown out of proportion.

"People in the villages (do) not (have) a problem. (For) people in the city, yes it's a problem" he said.

A MOTORCYCLIST killed while trying to flee police sped up and ran a red light within a “matter of seconds” of a patrol car trying to intercept him.

A 39-year-old Boronia man died this morning after crashing into a ute on the corner of Dandenong Rd and Atkinson St in Oakleigh.

Victoria Police Superintendent Richard Watkins said police were investigating the incident.

“The investigation will look into (the police officers’) decision-making around the reason for the intercept and then what’s followed from there,” Supt Watkins said.

“They’ve activated the sirens, they’re moving and (the motorcyclist) accelerated, it was a matter of seconds.

“In terms of their experience, it’s unusual for police to see a car crash, we get called to them all the time but we don’t usually see them occur.”

Supt Watkins said it was not clear why the police officers — a Sergeant and Leading Senior Constable — tried to intercept the motorcyclist.

“At this stage that’s part of the investigation so I’m not clear on the reason for the intercept,” he said.

“Police were patrolling the area when they saw a motorbike, they activated their lights and sirens, before they could make any decisions as to whether they would pursue the motorcycle, it ran a red light at the intersection and was struck by an oncoming utility.”

Supt Watkins said the 54-year-old driver of the ute was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“It’s shattering for him, he’s received physical injuries but he’s got to live with the fact that he’s been in a crash where somebody has died,” he said.

He said the Major Collision investigation unit continued to probe the incident,
