In Memorium: ISV Honorary Fellow Ray Holmes (1928 – 2020) was a humble yet brilliant man, a past Surveyor-General Victoria, educator, and mentor who gave back to his and the international community and the surveying profession in many ways.

Specifically, his leadership in Crown Land, water supply and surface hydrological surveys both in Australia and overseas, and his contributions to the Institution of Surveyors. Ray’s leadership in the search for evidence and artefacts of the ill-fated expedition of Burke and Wills, and his generous donations of those artefacts to the State Library of Victory, has enabled the preservation of important Australian history of exploration. In 1970 and 1971, Ray led groups of specially selected personnel to lead the Ethiopian Aid Project in his role as an expert Surveyor and Hydrologist. Throughout his time in these senior positions, he showed outstanding leadership and elevated the status and efficiency of Land Surveyors considerably. Ray carried out leadership roles particularly in the Victorian Division of the Institution of Surveyors Australia (ISA) of which he was a foundation member. He was Victorian President in 1975, and a National Councillor from 1976 to 1979. In 2016 he received a 70 Year Membership Certificate. Ray will be sadly missed.

Airborne Gravity Survey. New airborne gravity surveys are planned to improve the vertical accuracy of GPS and to advance the understanding of Victoria’s geology. Surveyor-General Victoria is engaging with stakeholders and providing notification of airborne gravity surveys preparing to be flown across large regions of Victoria. The new gravity data will significantly improve Victoria’s gravity model which is used to provide accurate and reliable heights from GNSS positioning. Considered going Paperless in Covid-19? How are you eliminating extraneous paperwork in your workplace and is there a push to go electronic?

Some of our Members are trying to work out how they can get less mail coming into their office during this time. Many businesses are seizing the opportunity to go paperless after the recent shakeup brought about by Covid-19 and the new remote working environment. Offering environmental and operating efficiencies, reducing paperwork can save staff time by ensuring information is at hand and digitally searchable.

We would love to hear your ideas!
