Every autumn from the early 1700s to the coming of the railways, something extraordinary happened on the outskirts of Falkirk. Tens of thousands of shaggy Highland cattle, driven from the furthest glens of Sutherland, Skye, Ross, Argyll and every Highland parish in between, arrived at the Falkirk Tryst, the greatest cattle fair in Britain. 🐄🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The drovers who brought them were a world unto themselves. They walked hundreds of miles with their herds, following the ancient drove roads across moor and mountain, sleeping rough, guiding their animals with extraordinary skill. A drover's word was his bond. Their credit was trusted from Highland townships to London banks. When they returned south, they often brought back not just money but news, ideas, songs and stories, stitching the remote Highlands into the broader world of commerce.

At the peak of the Tryst, 30,000 cattle might change hands in a single week, alongside horses, sheep, and the extraordinary social tumult of dealers, merchants, pedlars and entertainers who followed the fair. When the railways arrived in the 1840s, cattle could be transported directly to the cities. The drove roads emptied. The Tryst faded. An entire way of life, built on the sound of 30,000 hooves, went silent. 🎶

A quiet Highland isn't an accident. It's the result of thoughtful breeding, good stockmanship, and investing time every single day.
