We’re urging Victorians to follow safe charging practices, after five lithium-ion battery fires were recorded across the state within 24 hours.
Three people were hospitalised – requiring treatment for smoke inhalation – and at least one home was destroyed.
The blazes occurred in Ballarat, Kyneton, Port Melbourne, St Kilda and Sunshine West, and involved three e-bikes, a drone, and a rechargeable vehicle jump-starter pack.
“These are everyday devices found in many Victorian homes, which is why it’s so important people understand the risks and follow safety advice,” Energy Safe CEO Leanne Hughson said.
Early information indicates a range of risk factors may have contributed to and intensified the incidents, including e-bike modification, using a suspected mismatched replacement charger, overcharging and charging inside a bedroom.
We’re reminding the community to follow simple steps to reduce risk – purchase from reputable suppliers, use only the manufacturer-approved charger, charge batteries on non-flammable surfaces and away from exits, and cease use if the battery emits strong odors, unusual sounds, or warps in shape.
