Most Australians hadn’t heard of Dhilmar Ltd before the Anglo American deal.

That was the point.

Dhilmar isn’t a listed coal giant with a household name, quarterly investor calls and years of media coverage in Queensland. It’s a privately held, UK-registered mining company, and until now its public footprint was limited compared with the size of the assets it is about to control.

The Anglo transaction changed that overnight.

The deal is worth up to US$3.875 billion in cash, with US$2.3 billion payable upfront and a price-linked earnout of up to US$1.575 billion. It covers Anglo’s Australian steelmaking coal portfolio, including interests in Moranbah North, Grosvenor, Capcoal, Roper Creek, Dawson South and Theodore South, plus Moranbah South.

It also includes Middlemount, the mining town built around coal.

That means Dhilmar isn’t just buying pits, wash plants and reserves. It is stepping into a living industrial system: housing, workers, families, water supply, childcare, commercial property and a medical centre.

So why hadn’t we heard much about it?

Because Dhilmar’s rise has been quiet, private and asset-focused. Anglo says its leadership has experience across major mining operations, including steelmaking coal, in South East Asia and Canada. In 2025, Dhilmar also acquired the Éléonore gold mine in Canada from Newmont.

This isn’t a small company suddenly discovering mining.

It’s a low-profile buyer moving into the spotlight because Anglo’s Bowen Basin exit is too large to ignore.
