CEO, Sales Agent, Speaker & Author

Michael Nitschke is one of the most well-known real estate agents in the Adelaide Hills. Having worked as a sales agent since 2006 under the family name, Michael stepped into a sole Director role in 2018 after losing his father, who had started the agency in 2000. Just 30 years old, with no prior leadership or management experience, Michael had inherited a busi

ness on the brink of massive financial collapse, but turned it into a thriving, profitable, independent agency – in four years. He documented this astonishing journey in his book, Leading Out of Loss. Michael is an active sales agent, the inspiring leader of his growing team at Nitschke, a motivational speaker at events and conferences around Australia, and now, a published author. Growth for growth's sake is just accelerating towards an unknown direction.

In April I flew to Sydney to keynote the REINSW Wire Conference — an exclusive event where I shared the concepts sitting at the core of my book and the way I lead my business every day.

The central idea: stop focusing on external conditions and start focusing on your internal state. I inherited a business millions in debt when my parents passed away suddenly. I thought surviving that was passing some kind of test. What I didn't realise is there is no test. The messy middle never ends — and that's not a problem. That's just leadership.

I also pushed hard on two things that don't get enough airtime. One — the standard you walk past is the standard you accept. When you let it slide, you don't just lose the standard. You demoralise everyone who was holding it. Two — better before bigger. Before you chase the next number, ask what you can do better right now. It changes every decision you make.

I've written up the key takeaways from that talk — read the full piece below

Most businesses already have a culture. The problem is they didn't choose it.

When I took over Nitschke, we had a culture of silos — everyone out for themselves, no shared mission, no cross-department communication. I thought we had no culture. But we did. Just not one that was working.

Building a team worth joining starts before the job ad. It starts with knowing your mission, being honest about where you're at, and only hiring people who see themselves in what you're building.

The right culture hire isn't an accident. Here's how we made it deliberate.

Tough times don’t just test your business… they reveal how you think.

When pressure hits, most people react.
But what if the real advantage comes from how you frame the situation?

In this piece, Michael shares a raw look at how he approaches P&L during challenging seasons and why focusing purely on numbers might actually be the wrong move.

It’s not about ignoring reality… it’s about seeing it differently.

If you’re navigating a tough season in business, this might shift your perspective.

In business, it’s easy to think you need to impress to win…

But what if the real advantage is being real?

The truth is, people don’t connect with scripts, polished pitches, or “sales mode.” They connect with honesty, clarity, and genuine intent. In fact, trust is built through real conversations — not rehearsed ones.

So the question is… are you showing up as a version of yourself or as yourself?

What if chasing growth is actually holding your business back?

For years, the focus was on getting bigger — more listings, more managements, more market share. But something didn’t quite align.

So the approach changed.

Instead of chasing numbers, the focus shifted to something far more powerful: being better.

Better service.
Better relationships.
Better impact.

The surprising part? Growth didn’t slow down… it accelerated — but in a way that actually felt right.

If you’re a business owner, leader, or entrepreneur rethinking what success really looks like, this perspective might challenge the way you see your own growth.

Everyone is chasing the next big tool, platform, or AI solution… but what if the real growth lever isn’t technology at all?

Many businesses rush to implement new systems hoping they’ll solve growth challenges. But without the right people in place, even the best tools can create more complexity than progress.

What if the real advantage isn’t the tech you choose, but the team you build first?

What if the standards you overlook are the very ones holding you back?

We talk about goals, targets and growth, but rarely discuss the everyday standards that shape our results. The truth is, the things you tolerate quietly become the habits that define your success… or limit it.

This piece dives into how the standards you accept set the tone for your work, your team, and your long-term outcomes and why shifting them might be the most meaningful change you make this year.
