You can see the whole house from the kettle.

That's not a criticism. Get the sightlines right and a compact plan stops feeling compact — same floor the whole way through, no steps, nothing to walk around.

Tile to the ceiling. A bed that isn't wedged in. A bathroom you can turn around in. Small done properly beats big done cheap.

This is the bit that never shows up in a floor plan.

Dave and Coleen wanted a place on the Murray at Blanchetown without losing a year to a building site. Theirs was finished in our factory. Kitchen, bathroom, the lot. Then craned onto the block in a morning.

Now it's Sunday afternoons on the deck. Which was always the point.

Ever notice how some builds just look right on their block?

Warm timber tones on the door, the battens, the decking... it wasn't a random choice. With gum trees surrounding the block, the materials were picked to sit comfortably within the landscape.

Step back far enough, and the whole build feels like it's grown into its spot, rather than being dropped onto it (even though, technically, it was... cranes and all).

When this block was being planned, there was a pretty easy call to make - cut the tree down, or build around it. We went with the second option and cut a gap straight through the roofline so it could keep doing its thing.

While it may be a small decision, it's the kind of detail that makes a house feel like it belongs on its block, not just built on top of it.
