Throwback Thursday 🙌
Back in 1996, Rob’s dad, Bob Mackay, relocated the original Boondall Wetlands Information Centre to its new home at the wetlands.
And this one certainly wasn’t an easy move!
The building was transported in sections and taken as far into the site as the house removal trailers could get. Eventually, the ground became simply too wet for the trailers to go any further.
So what did they do?
They slid the house sections the rest of the way into position by hand. 😳
No fancy equipment or easy access — just plenty of experience, ingenuity and some seriously hard yakka. 💪
The Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre went on to officially open in March 1996, but while digging into the history of this job, we discovered an amazing family connection we never knew about.
Rob’s wife Kristy’s great-aunt, Patricia Vaughan, was the local Councillor at the time and opened the centre.
So, completely unbeknownst to either side of the family all these years later, Rob’s dad relocated the building… and Kristy’s great-aunt opened it. ❤️
Nearly 30 years later, we’re still moving houses and buildings across Queensland — although thankfully the trucks and equipment have come a long way since then!
It’s pretty special uncovering pieces of our history like this.
Hard yakka then. Still getting it done today.
