🏠 UPDATE: MINIMUM HOUSING STANDARDS❗

Starting 1 September 2024, all Queensland rental properties and tenancies must meet new minimum housing standards.

As a property owner or manager, you have a responsibility under Queensland rental laws to ensure your properties meet these standards, which aim to make all rental properties safe, secure, and functional. These standards complement existing rules that require properties to be livable, well-maintained, and compliant with health and safety regulations.

Additionally, recent changes to rental laws that began on 6 June 2024 include new requirements for rent increases and bond lodgements. Now, property owners and managers must:

• Limit rent increases to once every 12 months, applying to the property rather than the individual tenancy.

• Record the date of the last rent increase in all new tenancy agreements.

• Provide evidence of the date of the last rent increase within 14 days of a tenant's written request.

• Include the date of the last rent increase on a Bond lodgement (Form 2) or when using RTA Web Services.

It's crucial to act now to ensure your rental properties comply with these regulations by 1 September 2024. These changes have been in effect for new and renewed tenancies since 1 September 2023, so many properties are already on track.

Tenants have various options if they believe their rental property doesn't meet the required standards. Likewise, property managers and owners have recourse if a property falls short due to tenant actions.
