Important changes to bag limits for Black Bream in the Gippsland Lakes system.
We’re working to ensure a bright future for black bream in the Gippsland Lakes by changing its bag limit.
A survey of more than 3,800 rec fishers showed clear support for additional protection measures to ensure the sustainability of bream stocks in the lakes.
The change reduces the bag limit for black bream, only in the Gippsland Lakes, to 7 down from 10.
The legal size range between 28cm and 38cm – also known as a slot limit – remains in place to help protect larger bream that are more prolific breeders.
Of the survey respondents, 74% supported reducing the bag limit and 83% supported the existing slot limit.
The slot limit was introduced in 2021 as part of the Gippsland Lakes Recreational Fishery Plan, to return the net-free lakes to their glory days as a recreational fishing mecca.
The change applies only to the Gippsland Lakes and its tributaries, including the Tambo, Mitchell and Nicholson rivers, but not Lake Tyers. The bag limit for bream of all species remains unchanged at 10 elsewhere across the state, with a minimum size of 28cm and no maximum size. For more information, head to www.vfa.vic.gov.au/news
