Clients are often surprized to hear that I'm more than a humble Sunshine Coast real estate photographer but also and international photojournalist and have covered many stories of humanitarian disasters and civil war.
On this day twenty years ago we began hearing about the the worst natural disaster of its kind in human history. An earthquake registering a magnitude of at least 9.1 struck off the coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, in the Indian Ocean. The following day I was in Brisbane preparing to fly to Sri Lanka to cover the story for the News Ltd organization. The death and destruction I observed was overwhelming at times but tempered a little by miraculous stories of survival. It was three weeks of reporting I will never forget.
