The Man Who Ran Faster Than Horses – Koolbiri, the “Magic Mailman” of the Nullarbor

Every fortnight, he ran 280 miles barefoot across one of the harshest landscapes on Earth—the Nullarbor Plain. Carrying nothing but mailbags, Koolbiri, known to colonists as “Mailman Jimmy,” connected two tiny 1870s settlements: Fowlers Bay and Eucla. No roads. No telegraph. Just the endless plain and one Mirning man who seemed unstoppable.

Faster than a man on horseback, Koolbiri ran that route for nearly six years, bringing letters, news, and life to isolated corners of colonial Australia. The settlers called him a magic man. To his people, he was simply a skilled hunter and navigator, guided by thousands of years of Mirning knowledge—knowing every rock hole, every water source, every sign of life in a vast land others called empty.

He carried no supplies, living off the land, drinking from ancient rock wells, hunting along the way. While the colonists saw a miracle, the Mirning saw mastery. For traveling over 11,000 miles on foot, Koolbiri was paid not in money, but in to***co.
By 1877, the telegraph made his service obsolete. Yet his footsteps—barefoot across the Nullarbor—remain one of the great feats of endurance and knowledge in Australian history.

Today, his descendants, like Mirning elder Bunna Lawrie, keep his story alive: “The only man who could walk as fast as a horse,” he said.
Koolbiri wasn’t magic—he was a master of Country.
His story deserves to be remembered.
