North-East Facing House in NSW: Why They Beat South-Facing Blocks EVERYTIME.
The research on this is remarkably consistent. The best orientation for natural light and energy efficiency is north, and active spaces such as the living, kitchen and dining areas should face that way. North-facing windows receive the most direct sunlight across the day, particularly through winter when the sun sits lower in the sky. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so a north-facing home collects the most useful light over the course of the day.
Facing a home to the north captures light and heat during winter while keeping out the worst of the summer sun, provided the eaves and glazing are designed to work with it. Orientation is not a solo act either. Ceiling fans, smart window placement and energy-saving features all multiply the benefit of a well-oriented block, and they can also soften the shortcomings of a poorly oriented one. That does not make a good block and a bad block equal, but it does mean aspect is a starting advantage rather than a guarantee.
