Publication of Strata Hub data

Earlier this year, SCA (NSW) raised concerns with NSW Fair Trading on behalf of many members regarding the public availability and unintended use of detailed contact information available through the Strata Manager Finder.

These concerns related to the use of this data for unsolicited marketing, business development activities, and its aggregation by AI and commercial data-mining platforms.

In response, NSW Fair Trading has implemented several changes to enhance data security and address these concerns. The AGM date and strata manager name are now only accessible via the Strata Hub login, search activity has been limited to 10 plans per month, and CAPTCHA controls have been introduced to help prevent automated data harvesting.

NSW Fair Trading has advised that it will continue to monitor this search functionality. We encourage members to notify SCA (NSW) of any ongoing concerns regarding the publication or use of Strata Hub data so we can raise these directly with Fair Trading.

📢 New strata committee training requirements commence 1 October 2026

From 1 October 2026, NSW Fair Trading will introduce annual training requirements for strata committee members.

The introductory training is free to complete, online, self-paced and delivered through NSW Fair Trading's Strata Hub. The course takes approximately an hour to complete.

All elected committee members at AGM's held on or after 1 October 2026 will need to complete this training within three months of their election, otherwise they will automatically cease to be a committee member.

Earlier this week, SCA (NSW) met with NSW Fair Trading to seek clarification on a range of questions raised by our members about how the new training requirements will work in practice.

We’ve sent members an update covering answers to some of the key questions, along with our recommendations and suggested wording to include on upcoming AGM agendas.

🔦 Sponsor Spotlight: Bannermans lawyers

The NSW Government has passed the Building (Approvals and Practitioners) Bill 2026, which will replace the Design and Building Practitioners Act 2020 later this year. This reform will change the framework for resolving disputes involving defective building work, particularly for residential apartment buildings.

The new Bill will overhaul the building approval system and introduce new regulatory requirements for building practitioners. Liabilities and options will also be changing, potentially improving or downgrading certain people’s positions when it comes to responsibilities of defective building work.

To understand how these changes may affect your obligations, you can read the full article ‘Pending repeal of the Design & Building Practitioners Act 2020 | Get advice on maintaining your duty of care rights‘ by navigating to the Bannermans Knowledge Library.

The NSW Legislative Assembly Committee has released its final report on electric vehicle infrastructure, with a strong focus on the challenges facing strata and apartment buildings.

Among its key recommendations are updates to building and housing policies so new multi-dwelling developments are EV-ready, and better guidance for upgrading existing strata buildings with EV charging infrastructure.

With EVs now accounting for around 1 in 5 new car sales in NSW, expanding charging infrastructure is becoming an increasingly important issue for the strata sector.
