UMS Australia is thrilled to announce we have been acquired by the Programmed Group Programmed!
This is an exciting opportunity for our people and customers. The purchase will strengthen UMS’s financial position, allow us to better service our customers, and – importantly – keep all of our fantastic team employed.
Programmed is a leading provider of staffing, facility management, maintenance and care services. They employ over 30,000 people across a broad range of industries and partner with more than 10,000 customers of all sizes.
“I’d like to thank the entire UMS team for all their efforts in making the business what it is today. We have grown from zero employees in 1995 to a staff of over 500. I am proud of what we were able to deliver and could not have done this without our amazing people,” says UMS Owner and CEO Campbell Walker, who will be stepping away to focus on family-owned businesses.
The transition is set for the last day of November.

Naidoc Week
UMS Acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated in Indigenous communities, and by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
2022 National NAIDOC Poster
The 2022 National NAIDOC Poster was designed by Ryhia Dank, a young Gudanji/Wakaja artist from the Northern Territory.
Ryhia explains, “I created this piece after reading this year’s National NAIDOC Week theme – Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! I knew straight away I wanted to do a graphic piece centred around our flags with text highlighting what we have been through and are still fighting for” said Ryhia. “I feel that this piece being black and white allows us to focus on the details and messages in the artwork”

When Talon Bland - our Regional Coordinator for Rodney - heard there was a pile of chairs no longer needed by Mahurangi East Library, his ears pricked up. Too good to be dumped, Talon was committed to finding the chairs a new home.
He reached out to an old colleague he knew was involved in the Waimauku Scouts and offered them up - an offer that was gladly accepted.
We love that our team will go the extra mile to think about their community and to upcycle and recycle where possible! 👏

As we approach the end of 2021, it’s important for us as a company to reflect on the year that’s been and to thank our loyal clients for their business and continued support.

One of the highlights of the year for us was the way we formed a unified front with our clients in the face of COVID-19, working collaboratively with them and their teams to keep up-to-date with best practice and adjust the nature of services delivered in response to evolving restrictions in each region across Australia and New Zealand.

As the year comes to a close we look forward to continuing these partnerships into 2022 and beyond and being able to meet once again, or for the first time in person.

On behalf of the entire UMS team, we send you our best wishes for the festive season and a happy and safe New Year.

Last Thursday various members of our team including Kirstie Chanadi, Michael Varga, Mark Thomas, James Burris as well as the Catholic Education Office’s Fergus Chisholm had the pleasure of attending the Facility Management Association’s Awards for Excellence. UMS was again a proud partner for the event.

The 2021 FM Industry Awards for Excellence recognised the best in facilities management across various categories, including sustainability, innovation, partnerships and more. We’d like to extend our congratulations to the deserving finalists and winners from the night.

“It was wonderful to return to larger Facilities Management events following another year of Covid-19 lockdowns. The night was a great opportunity for us to reconnect with peers and colleagues within the industry, and we’re looking forward to celebrating the event once again in 2022.” – Michael Varga, Victorian State Manager: Buildings.

UMS is pleased to announce some exciting changes we have made to the Grounds and Open Space business. These changes ensure we can continue to exceed our customer requirements, drive best practice safety and staff training, and grow into the future.

Congratulations to David Fraser, who has accepted an opportunity to move into a newly created national role of ‘Training & Safety Operations Manager’. This is a crucial role for our business and will ensure that UMS continues its strong focus on operational training and safety.

Anton Malmstrom will be stepping into the role of ‘Contract Manager’ for our City of Yarra operations. Anton has worked his way up through the ranks at UMS and we congratulate him on another step up.

Additionally, Heath Appleton will be supporting the City of Casey Open Space contracts. Heath will continue to lead the North/West operations, in addition to this new responsibility.

Finally, Adrian Box will continue to focus on the extensive and rapid growth of our sports turf contracts, as well as develop internal capability to deliver similar services to both new and existing clients and targeted growth sectors.

We are delighted to announce our Gold Tier sponsorship of Parade College, a Catholic secondary school for boys with almost 2000 students spread across their two campuses in the northern suburbs of Bundoora and Preston.

This sponsorship is particularly special to UMS, with two members of our leadership team Daniel Sacco and Michael Varga being past students of the school. It seemed fitting that UMS offer their support as the school embark on their flagship 150th Anniversary, with this significant milestone being celebrated with an Anniversary Concert in early 2022.

Our Turf Wicket Curator Justin Graham's smile says it all! We were extremely excited to receive delivery of our new curation equipment for Toorak Park.

Toorak Park is the home of the Prahran Cricket Club of which we are proud to be a premier sponsor. We’re looking forward to seeing the cricket club enjoy the benefits of this new equipment.

With lockdowns easing and summer just around the corner it’s wonderful to see the community getting out and spending quality time at their local parks, we look forward to keeping them in great shape for everyone to enjoy.

UMS began working with Hume City Council back in 2016, with just a four-man horticulture crew. Since then we have seen significant growth achieved through working hand-in-hand with our client, and exploring how we can create better outcomes. UMS are proud to have 25 staff members across horticulture, mowing and landscaping crews working for the City of Hume with more than half living in the area. This has also provided a great opportunity for 8 apprentices to contribute to the great work that we do.

UMS have gone above and beyond in the delivery of our services, through running refurbishment programs in lower profile parks in the area. Every 12 months, we bring forward suggestions and implementation plans to further develop the standard of the parks.

“Ensuring that our work is always of the highest quality, enables us to continue growing our contracts. We don’t settle for an adequate job and this is reflected through the excellent relationships we have maintained with our clients.” - Derek Drummond, Senior Contract Manager for Hume.

Collaborating with partners like Wallara Australia Ltd. allows UMS to support the people that live within the communities that we work, which is really important to us.

We value the work that Wallara Australia does to enhance the quality of life for people with different abilities and how they support them to participate fully and equally in the community.

Over the past year, we have joined forces with Wallara Australia to provide their people with the opportunity to learn real and meaningful employment skills at UMS.

The initiative aims to provide experiences where they develop practical skills with a view to towards securing employment in the future.

“UMS has been collaborating with Wallara’s Land Management Services to provide people with work in areas like bushland management along the Yarra Trail and planting trees in and around metropolitan and rural areas.

“This is an evolving relationship that we are very excited about where we constantly look for opportunities to get the team at Wallara on board with our projects,” said our Grounds & Open Spaces Manager Daniel Sacco.

“It’s exciting to be working with UMS to provide job opportunities across a range of different settings and we look forward to continuing to grow the relationship between Wallara Australia and UMS in the future,” said Wallara Manager Raymond Lee.
