Today, the Sydney Gay and Le***an Mardi Gras Parade route was added to the NSW State Heritage Register!

The listing celebrates the legacy of original protesters who stood up for recognition and acceptance and acknowledges the pivotal role the route has played in the social history of NSW.

The courage of those who marched in 1978 was inspiring and reaped results. Their protests galvanised le***an and gay activists and the broader community with common goals to end police harassment, repeal oppressive legislation and end discrimination.

All those who have marched this historic route walk in their footsteps.

The timely heritage listing complements and builds on the events, programs and initiatives that are planned for Sydney WorldPride 2023 and the City’s new, Australian-first Oxford Street LGBTIQA+ Social and Cultural Place Strategy.

We are committed to ensuring that the history and identity of Oxford Street and its surrounding neighbourhood is properly recognised and will strengthen its LGBTIQA+ character.
