Before Myer, David Jones and shopping centres, these four department stores defined retail in Perth.

Boans, Ahern's, Bairds and Foy & Gibson weren't just places to shop, they were destinations. They introduced generations of Western Australians to city shopping, Christmas traditions and some of Perth's most recognisable commercial buildings.

Many of the locations they occupied continue to play an important role in Perth's retail landscape today, highlighting how commercial property continually evolves while remaining deeply connected to its history.

Which department store do you remember most?

LEASED & NOW OPEN | Six Streets, 140 William Street, Perth

Lease Equity is pleased to announce the opening of Six Streets at 140 William Street, the latest concept from the operators behind Perth favourite, Six Senses Thai.

Marking their second Six Streets venue, the new restaurant brings a modern take on Thai street food to the Perth CBD, complemented by a bold and contemporary fit-out.

Six Streets is the latest addition to Cbus Property’s 140 precinct, further strengthening its hospitality offering alongside favourites including Light Years, Grill’d, Nando’s, Bocelli Espresso, Ribs & Burgers and BamBamBoo.

Located in the heart of the CBD, at the corner of Murray Street Mall, William Street & Wellington Street, 140 continues to evolve as a vibrant retail and dining destination, bringing together food, retail, art and public spaces within one of Perth’s most recognisable precincts.

Congratulations to all parties involved, and to the Six Streets team on the opening of their newest venue.

On Friday, the Lease Equity team had the opportunity to spend the day volunteering with Give Write, supporting the organisation’s work in providing new and recycled stationery and school supplies to Western Australian children in need.

The team rolled up their sleeves to help sort, prepare and pack essential supplies, helping Give Write ensure more students have access to the resources they need to get the most out of their education.

Giving back to our community is a core value at Lease Equity, as is supporting education and opportunities for the next generation.

A rewarding day for the team and a privilege to contribute both our time and a donation in support of the important work Give Write continues to do across WA.

Neighbourhood shopping centres are no longer just convenient, they're becoming some of WA's most resilient retail assets.

Driven by population growth, changing consumer behaviour and demand for convenience, these centres are evolving into true community hubs where people can shop, dine, access healthcare and complete everyday errands in one place.

For landlords and investors, success is about more than occupancy. It's about curating the right mix of retailers and services that reflect the needs of the local community and support long-term performance.

As Perth continues to grow, well-positioned neighbourhood centres will remain a key part of the retail landscape.

How Hay Street Mall changed Perth forever.

Long before experiential retail became a buzzword, Perth made a decision that reshaped the CBD.

Turning Hay Street from a traffic corridor into Perth's first pedestrian mall changed how people experienced the city, creating a destination where they could shop, connect and spend more time.

It's a reminder that great retail isn't just about individual stores. It's about creating places people want to return to.

From happy hour to recovery hour.

A noticeable shift is taking place across Western Australia's retail landscape.

Consumers are increasingly investing in experiences that support health, recovery and connection. Boutique wellness operators, premium fitness clubs and bathhouse concepts are expanding rapidly, while hospitality venues continue to evolve through entertainment-led experiences and gamification.

This isn't simply a new retail trend, it's a reflection of changing consumer priorities.

For landlords, asset managers and leasing agents, it reinforces the importance of creating places that people choose to visit regularly, whether that's for fitness, recovery, social connection or entertainment.

The future of retail isn't just about what people buy. It's about how they choose to spend their time.

Retail isn't disappearing, it's evolving.

The strongest retailers today understand that customers aren't simply looking to buy a product. They're looking for an experience.

From high-quality fitouts and immersive store design to hospitality-inspired service and interactive displays, physical retail is becoming more engaging than ever.

For landlords and shopping centres, this highlights the importance of supporting retailers that invest in customer experience, as these businesses often contribute to stronger visitation, longer dwell times and a more vibrant retail environment.

Lakelands continues to prove why it's one of Perth's most exciting growth corridors.

As the community grows, so does the demand for quality retail, hospitality and lifestyle offerings that make everyday life more convenient and enjoyable.

It's great to see new operators choosing Lakelands as part of their expansion, with Amalfi Pizza and Salon Ayvaha recently opening their doors.

Each of these businesses brings something different to the precinct. More dining options, more services and more reasons for people to visit, stay longer and return more often.

For landlords, it's a reminder that strong retail environments are built through thoughtful tenant selection and a complementary mix. The right tenant in the right place doesn't just fill a tenancy, it strengthens the entire centre.

Looking forward to seeing these businesses become part of the Lakelands community and contribute to the precinct's continued growth.

Lease Equity’s Look Back In Time: Hillarys Boardwalk

Hillarys Boat Harbour was developed in the late 1980s as part of Western Australia’s coastal tourism infrastructure. From its early days as a marina and leisure precinct, the Boardwalk quickly became a focal point for waterfront dining, shopping and events.

Today, Lease Equity manages and leases the Boardwalk, guiding its tenant mix and programming so it continues to perform both as a local amenity and a year‑round destination. It’s an honour to be a part in sustaining such an iconic part WA’s coastal area.
