CDP Town Planning and Urban Design is delighted to announce that on the 11th of May, the State Development Assessment Unit (SDAU) approved a development application for twin residential towers (23 and 16 storeys respectively) at 91-93 Canning Highway, East Fremantle.

The development comprises:

- A maximum of 93 residential apartments;
- Communal residential facilities consisting of a swimming pool, a wellness centre and communal lounge and dining room.
- Office floor space distributed over three storeys;
- A ground floor café/restaurant; and
- Provision of 1690m2 of publicly accessible open space.

The approval process required the development to achieve ‘exemplary design’ with the application undergoing 4 rounds of review by the State Design Review Panel (SDRP).

The team at CDP are proud to have been a part of the team that secured approval for this project.

Last week our Town Planner Kenyon Greaves passed his halfway point for his .aus challenge.

Kenyon has been swimming laps for the month of March raising money for the youth mental health services provided by and has raised $907 so far.

Kenyon has challenged himself to swim an accumulative 15km and is hoping to exceed his target goal before the 31st of March. If you are interested in contributing towards Kenyon’s fundraiser please follow the link provided:

CDP extends a hearty welcome to Kenyon Greaves who has joined us as a Town Planner. Kenny graduated from Curtin University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning (Honours). His dissertation on biophilic urban design and renaturing cities is an indication of his passion for modern sustainable urban design principles and green development.

Since graduation, Kenny has gained valuable experience working in local governments in WA and NSW. At CDP he will be working alongside our experienced planners and urban designers on structure plans and other planning applications from which he will acquire valuable knowledge on project design, ex*****on, and management. We very much look forward to his input and insight.

Out of work hours, Kenny is looking forward to the warmer weather so he can indulge his love of the beach and showing off the beach body he’s been honing at the gym over winter!

Projects in the Spotlight

Winner of the Russel Perry Award for Urban Development Excellence and the 2020 Excellence in Social and Community Infrastructure Award; Amberton Beach Coastal Precinct is an exemplar demonstration of how coastal residential development can be developed in a site responsive way whilst meeting the lifestyle and recreational aspirations of residents.

We’re proud to have had the opportunity to work with the Stockland project team on this project and join others in congratulating them on their success at the prestigious UDIA Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner last week.

We also extend our congratulations and thanks to others on the broader consultancy project team; we look forward to working together in the future.

Staff Development & Training

Keeping abreast of the changes occurring within our planning system, several members of our team here at CDP attended the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage Interest Group Workshops for the Draft Medium Density Code Policy.

With public consultation submissions due in April, these workshops were a great opportunity for our team to gain insights from Design WA and to share our thoughts with our peers.

CDP is delighted that the Local Structure Plan prepared for the Central Withers Precinct in Bunbury on behalf of the Department of Communities has been endorsed by the WAPC.

Originally developed in the early-1960's as a public housing estate, based on "Radburn" design principles, much of the housing stock was sold to private investors years ago. Low land values and social issues, compounded by high levels of absentee ownership, continue to hinder improvements to ageing building stock and housing diversity. The Department of Communities commissioned the preparation of a local structure plan to finesse and implement strategies to address accessibility and land use that will promote renewal of the suburb, focusing on several under-utilised parcels of land in public ownership.

Having regard for the outcomes of extensive community consultation already undertaken with the Central Withers community and key stakeholders – including retention of the attractive and distinctive topography and significant trees that define the character of the area - CDP designed a workable solution to create a community focus and improve connectivity and pedestrian safety, and to provide opportunity and guidance for the redevelopment of key sites.
