Buying property is exciting—but let’s be honest, the extra costs can feel overwhelming. One of the biggest to factor in is transfer duty (previously known as stamp duty), which can have a real impact on your overall budget.
Transfer duty is a government tax applied to certain property transactions, including real estate purchases and some business asset transfers. The amount you’ll pay depends on the value of the property and the applicable rate.
Here’s a snapshot of the current general rates in Western Australia:
• $0 – $120,000: $1.90 per $100
• $120,001 – $150,000: $2,280 + $2.85 per $100 above $120,000
• $150,001 – $360,000: $3,135 + $3.80 per $100 above $150,000
• $360,001 – $725,000: $11,115 + $4.75 per $100 above $360,000
• $725,001 and above: $28,453 + $5.15 per $100 above $725,000
Keep in mind: foreign purchasers of residential property may also be subject to an additional 7% duty.
