📍General Motors, Mosman Park 6012

In 1926, General Motors Australia opened their Mosman Park plant on the corner of Buckland Avenue and Victoria Street. From assembling vehicles from imported component packs to producing Holden vehicles for the local market, General Motors in Mosman Park played an important role in WA’s early automotive industry. 🚗

The plant was operational for more than 4 decades and even shifted to producing boat and aircraft components during the Second World War. After initial expansion in the late 1960’s, the Mosman Park site was declared too small and constrained for General Motors to continue at this facility, resulting in the plant closing in 1972 and General Motors production being relocated.

Although the original factory was demolished, General Motors in Mosman Park holds a significant place in WA’s automotive history for its early contribution to General Motors and Holden’s development in Australia.

📍Swanbourne Hotel, Swanbourne

The Swanbourne Hotel was built in 1940 on the corner of Claremont Crescent and Franklin Street and became a well-known landmark for the Western Suburbs. The Hotels Inter-War Functionalist style and Art Deco influences entailed a prominent staircase tower, curved elements and cantilevered verandas.

The Swanbourne Hotel became a staple in the social scene of the suburb due to its short distance from the railway line. The Hotel was originally built with 13 bedrooms and a proprietor’s suite, later renovations included the addition of a garden restaurant, outdoor terraces, private facilities and entertainment areas. The venue continued to be modernised during the 80’s and 90’s in order to attract new visitors. 🍻

The Swanbourne Hotel was classified by the National Trust of WA in 1995 and was described as a rare surviving example of its modern architectural style in many heritage records.

Although the Swanbourne Hotel held significance both for its architectural qualities and social popularity, the Hotel was eventually demolished in 1999.

📍Perth Royal Show, Claremont 6010

The annual Perth Royal Show is one of WA’s oldest and notorious community events. The Agricultural Society of WA hosted the first show back in 1831, which was an exhibition showcasing farming, livestock, and agricultural innovations. 🎠

The event evolved over time to provide entertainment, competition and attractions in order to cater to the wider public of WA and in 1905, the show found its permanent home at the Claremont Showgrounds. The Perth Royal Show continued to expand with sideshow rides, food stalls, and evening fireworks, drawing in crowds of up to 460,000 people. 🎢🍿

The Perth Royal Show strives to entwine WA’s agricultural identity with school holiday fun as it has done for nearly two centuries. Running from the 26th September – 3rd October, the Perth Royal Show is a great activity for these school holidays. 🎆

📍Cottesloe Picture Theatre

The Cottesloe Picture Theatre was established in 1924 on the corner of Stirling Highway and Leake Street in Wells Hall, the area’s former community hall. During the 1920’s the hall started screening pictures both indoors and in its newly developed outdoor picture garden.

In 1936-1937 the theatre was drastically remodeled to transform the old hall into a modern Art Deco-style cinema. The renovated Cottesloe Picture Theatre, now able to seat up to 1,150 people, reopened in April 1937 and was operated by local cinema entrepreneur Lewis Hatfield. 🎥

The theatre continued to operate into the early 1960s as an important social and entertainment venue for the Western Suburbs. The cinema was eventually demolished in 1964 along with surrounding properties and redeveloped into the formally known Grove Shopping Centre, now Cottesloe Central.

📍Prix d’Amour, Mosman Park 6012

Built during the 90’s by mining magnate Lang Hancock and his wife, Rose Porteous, the Prix d’Amour was one of Perth’s most notorious and extravagant mansions. 🏡

The enormous residence that stood on Wellington Street was built with a grand classical style in mind and featured many elaborate details such as its formal gardens, extensive balconies, double-height columned entrance, and sweeping Swan River views. 🌅

The residence’s lavish entertaining areas allowed it to play host to many events and gatherings, catching the eye of local media and resulting in the home being deemed the “grandest and best-known home of its era in Perth” by The Heritage Council. 🥂

Following the passing of Lang Hancock in 1992, the residence became entwined in legal disputes over its ownership. The matter was later put to rest when Rose Porteous commissioned the demolition of the Prix d’Amour in 2006, with the approximately 8,500 square metre estate originally set to be subdivided into ten residential lots.

Today, two luxury homes stand on the ground of the historical Prix d’Amour, whose memory as one of Perth’s most extravagant homes continues to live in on Mosman Park through newspaper archives and photographs.
