Throwback Thursday! 🕰️
📍The Albion Hotel, Cottesloe 6011

The Albion Hotel in Cottesloe has a history stretching back to pre-Fremantle train line when Stirling Highway was known as the Perth–Fremantle road.

The site was originally utilised as a Halfway House for travelers making the journey between Perth and the port of Fremantle and is suggested by some to date back as far as the 1830s, with the sites earliest heritage records dating back only to the 1860s. 🛎️

The property was purchased by Robert Napoleon Bullen in 1882 with the intention to turn the site into a major recreational destination. His plans for the Albion Pleasure Grounds involved facilities such as bowling greens, tennis courts, a racetrack and a cricket ground. 🏅

Bullen was never able to see his plan come to fruition due to his passing, but his efforts resulted in the site becoming an important landmark within Cottesloe’s developing district.

The unveiling of Cottesloe’s railway in the 1880s further increased the area’s popularity and turned it into an iconic gathering place for the community.

In 1912, Swan Brewery developed and constructed the Albion Hotel’s two-storey building that still stands today. The red-brick Federation-style building became a prominent landmark on Stirling Highway and is even listed on the Town of Cottesloe’s heritage list.

Even through several ownership changes, the hotel has continued to operate as a pub for more than a century and remains one of the top picks for locals in the western suburbs. 🍻

Throwback Thursday! 🕰️
📍Harley Scramble, Mosman Park 6012

The Harley Scramble commenced in 1928 and was one of WA’s greatest motorcycle events. Being held on the rugged Rope Works Circuit around Buckland Hill, the course consisted of bushland, disused quarries, sandy ground and steep limestone cliffs, making it a high intensity track that only the best riders and motorbikes could withstand. 🏆

Support for the annual race continued to grow, with crowds of spectators reaching up to 20,000 in the 1950’s. By 1952, the race had evolved to be 28 laps (105km) run over the course of two sessions. 🏍️

The Harley Scramble continued to entertain locals and travelers until its final race in 1964, after the Mosman Park Town Council closed the course due to the race creating noise disruptions in Buckland Hill’s growing residential community.

The memory of the Harley Scramble had a resurgence in 2025 after the release of John Steyntjes’ documentary, Harley Scramble: The Birth of Australian Motorcross, which premiered at Camelot Arts Club. Even though Mosman Park has greatly developed in recent years, the former racetrack is still remembered by locals and the whole event has remained a significant part of history for Mosman Park and Australian motorcross.

📍WA School for Deaf Children, Cottesloe 6011

The Western Australian School for Deaf Children opened in East Perth in 1896, however as enrolments grew, the school required a larger premises. As a result, the school was granted four acres of land on 53 Curtin Avenue near Cottesloe Beach by the State Government in 1898. The school was fully constructed and re-opened at its new location in 1900. 🏫

It became both a school and residential institution, providing education and boarding for children from all across Western Australia. The grounds included gardens, livestock and other facilities that helped make the institution relatively self-sufficient. 🍎

The institution was renamed the WA School for Deaf Children in 1956. By the later twentieth century, increasing numbers of deaf and hard-of-hearing children were being educated in mainstream schools with specialist support, leading to a lack of demand for the Cottesloe school. The residential facilities closed in 2001 with students vacated from the site in 2002. In 2023 the property was sold to Cottesloe Health, Aged & Community Care Pty Ltd for $31,500,000.

The schools Cottesloe buildings are now recognised for their historical and cultural significance after having been entered on the State Register of Heritage Places. The site represents more than a century of Western Australia's history of deaf education and the abundance of assistance supplied by the community to support deaf and hard-of-hearing children.

📍Taj on Swan, Peppermint Grove 6011

Western Suburbs locals will remember the presence and history of the Taj on Swan. Located at 2 Bay View Terrace in Peppermint Grove, the approximately 6,582 square metre block housed the infamous unfinished mansion.

Building plans suggest that the mansion would be a $70 million home featuring seven domes, an observatory with a revolving roof, private temple, gym, and parking for 17 cars. 💰

Construction for the Taj on Swan commenced in 2008 and concluded shortly after in 2010 following the collapse of the property owner’s business.

Having sat vacant for 6 years, the Taj on Swan was finally demolished in October 2016 due to a Shire of Peppermint Grove council vote and complaints from local residents regarding the building’s unattractive appearance and tendency to draw in squatters.

Following the demolition of the Taj on Swan, the property was purchased for $17 million by businessman John Gillett, who subdivided the land to build multiple modern luxury homes on smaller residential lots. The construction of these new luxury homes is what we can see today at 2 Bay View Terrace, Peppermint Grove. 🏡
