G'day folks! ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ
It's been a long while since we checked in through this page so, thought I would give you all a bit of an update on how things are travelling at the Salty Shack..
First of all, despite the lack of regular fishing reports and posts on this page that we have done in the past. It has been business as usual for us far as renting and bookings go.
We are still welcoming new guests, and very much appreciate our small following of regulars that have continued to support and stay with us, some for quite a few years now, which is fantastic. We cant thank you guys enough for your continued support ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™.

Having travelled, fished, and stayed in Portland for as long as I can remember myself.
Our vision for the shack from the very start was to supply convenient, very cost effective accommodation for small fishing groups and family's. Something that would be on the lowest price category of holiday rentals, and could compete, or better the over the top caravan park cabin prices, yet still have a place all to yourself, with privacy and plenty of room to park cars and boat (or 2).. While getting ourselves established we rented through the real estate, as well as this page. Things went incredibly well. We've had many great people stay, in fact the vast majority of guests have been an absolute pleasure to deal with...
However, as the saying goes "it only takes one" and unfortunately we've had a couple๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ So with that, and the fact we were needing to turn some of our repeat customers away more regularly than we'd like, we decided to part ways with the real estate and tone down our exposure a bit...

Theres been a few inquiries of recent times regarding our current prices.
Our pricing has been unchanged since just before covid, which im sure you will appreciate is pretty much unheard of..
Unfortunately our friends in government in their wisdom have now come up with yet another tax "the Victorian short stay levy" this effects us directly, and adds more pressure on top of the standard utility costs so there has been an increase in our nightly rates.

Our current rates are as follows:

Standard rate- $140 per night.
Public Holiday and peak times- $180 per night.
Prices inclusive for up to 3 adults..Or familys of 2 Adults and 2 children..
We will put something together and try to pin that price list on the page for easy viewing somewhere soon.
As usual, feel free to give me a call or message for any questions at all, I'll happy to help.
Cheers,
Darryn ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ

Salty shack guests, Jackson, Kalon, and Kalen landed this awesome barrel during their stay last weekend.
The fish went 106kg gilled and gutted! It was caught off a blind hookup behind the rock in 120 meters of water....
Congratulations guys!
I believe these lads now hold the Salty Shack record for the biggest tuna by a guest๐Ÿ’ช. Well done!๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ

Plenty of tuna offshore around Portland at the moment..
Mostly in the smaller sizes around 12 to 15kg, but for what they lack in size, they sure are making up for with numbers!.
Start looking for the birds and bait anywhere past the rock and the fish won't be far away.. Fish have been pretty willing to take most of the usual trolling lures, with the diving types such as Rapala xrap 30s, Halco laser pros, and Samaki pacemakers working the best for us..

As always at this time of year, there are also a few barrels out there for those willing to put in the effort, with one weighed in today at 115kg.

Cheers and happy fishing! ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ๐ŸŸ

Gday all.
Apologies as It's been a while since our last post, however It has been a busy period in Portland and Salty Shack, since the covid lockdowns were relaxed. We thank you for your support, and choosing our humble little shack on the beach for your family holidays, fishing trips and getaways๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™.
It has been fantastic to see so many more people extending their travel past the usual holiday hotspots, like Lorne or Apollo Bay, to come and see all Portland and surrounds have to offer. Portlandโ€™s beautiful coastline and the wide variety of things to see and explore, should not leave you disappointed๐Ÿ–..

๐ŸŽฃOn to the fishing๐ŸŽฃ
The north shore has again fished well for tuna over the last the last month or two. Fish have been spread all the way along to Port fairy around the 30mt line, they have been caught in as little as 10mts of water this year and have been seen regularly within a short distance from Wally's ramp. This opens up the opportunities to get amongst these great sports fish in smaller tinnys, jetskis and even kayak's.
Most boats are getting success for these tuna trolling smaller skirt lures in pink or white. While this is the popular general advice given to us from the local tackle shops, personally I have been far more successful sneaking up to the schools casting small to medium sized stickbaits to draw the strike, every day seems to be different on these things so be prepared to keep changing up lure size and colour until you crack the code๐Ÿ‘..
The kingfish have also fired at times in these areas this year, fish are biting best on first and last light and currently most boats are targeting these kings in the shallow waters around Minerva reef out from the abalone farm. Fishing at anchor with a burley trail with some live baits under a balloon is the popular technique getting results, squid strips are also a "go to" bait to fire up flighty kings into biting.

For the bottom bouncers there have been decent numbers of larger King George Whiting coming in for those putting in the work, the standard pinky snapper are always on offer throughout the Bay, and again those undersize snapper are in plague proportions both in the harbour and around north shore, so be prepared to lose a few baits when out doing this type of fishing.

The fish pictured come from east of Julia Reef on Sunday, they were in around 30mt and both took the halco slidog 105 on the cast...

Feel free to drop us a line during your stay at Salty Shack and we'll guide you to the best of our ability, to hopefully get into a few for yourselves.
Cheers,
And happy fishing๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŽฃ

Always worth a quick cast at the lee breakwall when your in town... Ive found it pays to have a rod pre rigged with a jig in the car for those quick trips to the "shops"๐Ÿ˜‰. The family will thank you for the tasty calamari rings.
This guy was second cast on the 6lb bream combo I had handy on one such trip ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿฆ‘๐Ÿ‘Œ

Salty shack fishing report๐Ÿฆˆ๐ŸŸ...

G'day all. First of all we would like to take the time to say thanks for the amazing support of recent times. Salty shack has experienced more visitors than ever in the last 12 months and we appreciate every one of you. It also has to be noted how well our guests are treating, and leaving the shack, it doesn't go unnoticed and that helps us to remain as what we believe to be the most cost effective short term accommodation in the area. Thank you all๐Ÿ™

Anyhow, on to the fishing!
The weather conditions seem to be finally starting to show some improvements, with a few calm days and even a small amount of sunshine ๐ŸŒž over the last few weeks so it's a great time to get out on the water.
The barrel tuna have again been consistent for this time of year with plenty getting caught early in the month. The tuna fishing has slowed a little over the last few weeks, but for the dedicated they are definitely still out there, with any fishable day still consistently seeing a jumbo tuna or two landed.
The Lee Breakwall is seeing the usual extra traffic that the school holidays bring and for good reason, it's such a convenient and easy platform to get the kids out for a fish, there are a few squid on offer, best spots are usually on the shallow end of the wall before the first gate. The pinky snapper are biting at times keeping everyone interested and there are some decent size fish but many are slightly undersize. Fishing the breakwall at night has also reported to be producing a few sharks including 7gill and gummys..
Offshore on Wednesday we fished the area South of Cape Nelson lighthouse, and found plenty of snapper around 35 to 40cm best baits were squid and fresh barracouta fillet. Any amount of these fish on offer out there if you can get through the couta without losing your gear as they really are thick right now. Good sized school shark and gummy shark in that area too, we managed one of each and lost a couple to bite offs, so it pays to use wire trace on your rigs if targeting gummys, as the school shark are just as common at the moment.
Good luck out there, and stay safe๐Ÿ‘
Cheers and happy fishing๐ŸŸ๐Ÿฆˆ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿฆˆ
