Today, we pause to honour the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of all who have served and continue to serve our nation. ANZAC Day is a time to reflect, remember, and pay our respects to the men and women who have defended our freedoms
As we reflect, Iβm reminded of my papou, Stefano (Steve) Griff, and his story of service during the Korean War.
Born in 1927, he was conscripted into the Greek Army and served under NATO. In November 1952, he arrived in Seoul, where he was later wounded in battle. He spent three months recovering in Tokyo with the American Medical Corps, where he learned his first English words from the nurses who cared for him. He was awarded a medal for bravery and often shared vivid memories from his time in service. In 1956, he moved to Renmark, where he built his life and remained until his passing in 2021.
His story is just one of many that remind us of the courage, sacrifice, and resilience carried by so many.
