About Robertson Futures Group

Robertson Futures Group is a committee of local residents dedicated to shaping a thriving, welcoming future for our village. Formed in 2018, we lead discussions, planning, and action on the issues that matter most: housing, transport, sustainability, local business vitality, and protecting our unique natural environment. For us, sustainability is more than lowering e

missions or caring for the environment. It’s about building a resilient community where daily needs can be met locally. A stronger retail base, especially access to affordable groceries, is central to keeping household costs down, reducing travel, and strengthening the social and cultural fabric of Robertson. We’ve hosted expert-led seminars and forums on topics ranging from healthy ageing and diverse housing to transport and tiny homes. Our focus now is to continue sparking discussion, sharing knowledge, and guiding practical solutions that support both young and old. Our committee is made up of passionate locals:

Neville Fredericks (President)
Mark Turner
Lani Fouché
Amanda Webb
Susan Everdell
Susan McGregor
Fiona King

Together, we invite you to share ideas, get involved, and help us secure a vibrant, sustainable future for Robertson.🌿

A great turnout at yesterday's Robertson Futures Group meeting. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

It was fantastic to see so many locals around the table, sharing ideas and taking part in conversations about Robertson’s future.

So what happened at the meeting?
We introduced our committee (again - so everyone could see we're real people :-) and reflected on why the group was formed - to help shape a village that works for everyone.

Some of the key topics we spoke about included:
🏡The need for more diverse housing options in Robbo, so young families, singles and downsizers can all find a place here.
🚶‍♀️The importance of footpaths, public transport and connectivity for a safer, more walkable town.
🌲The Redwood Forest, with a volunteer group taking shape nicely, with potential funding from Crown Lands to help care for this space
🏊‍♂️The future plans for the swimming pool, and new ideas that are slowly taking shape, like a multi-purpose sporting and community facility.
🏘️ Future development around town, and how we can work with Council to ensure the best outcomes for Robertson.

We discussed how Council has adopted the Robertson Place Plan, but that we're - frustratingly - not seeing any mention of it in current DA's, no plans of its implementation. We're brainstorming ways to remain a thorn in council's side so they can put the plan into action and give Robbo what we've been promised. (For those who want to read more about it - here's a link to the Place Plan https://www.wsc.nsw.gov.au/Council/Policies-Strategies-and-Reports/Strategies-and-Plans/Robertson-Village-Place-Plan

We’d love to see even more faces at the next meeting. We'll put up another post announcing the time and place for it.

A rare treasure in the heart of Robertson - and we need your help caring for it🌳

Did you know that right in the centre of Robertson we have a California Redwood forest - around six acres of some of the world’s most iconic trees? It sits just across the rail line on Meryla Street, only a short walk from Moonacres, and directly opposite the entrance to the Robertson Brush rainforest.

We're truly spoilt with its rarity: a majestic redwood forest facing a complex natural rainforest... both right in town. Many locals already enjoy this space. You've seen them around - kids riding their bikes, people taking a quiet walk, or simply pausing to take in its beauty.

Our dilemma: The forest is on Crown land and is currently not maintained. There is now a real opportunity to change that. Crown Lands may be open to establishing a local committee to help manage and care for the forest, with funding available to support maintenance and improvements.

The Robertson Futures Group is keen to help foster this, and we’re now looking for a small group of passionate locals who would be willing to lead this effort on behalf of the community. This is a rare chance to protect and enhance something truly special for current and future generations.

The Robertson Futures Group is a volunteer committee made up of local residents who care deeply about this village and its future.

President: Neville Fredericks
Vice President: Lani Fouché
Secretary: Mark Turner
Treasurer: Susan McGregor
Plus general committee members.

We are not part of Council, we don’t represent developers, and we don’t make money from the work we do. We are simply locals who give our time to help start informed, constructive conversations about the issues facing Robertson and to help preserve its future.

Our role is to ask questions, share information, and help the community understand the choices ahead - whether that’s about housing, local services, infrastructure, or caring for our natural environment. We engage with Council, government agencies, and other community groups when needed, because that’s how change happens, but we remain independent and community-focused.

Most of the topics we raise come directly from existing plans, studies, or community concerns - including the adopted Robertson Place Plan - and many of the ideas discussed have been shaped through public forums and local consultation over several years.

What’s “in it for us”? Nothing personal. We do this because we want Robertson to remain a thriving, welcoming village where people of all ages can live, work, and enjoy life - now and into the future.

You don’t have to agree with everything we post. In fact, healthy debate is encouraged. All we ask is that conversations remain respectful and open, because one of the strongest ingredients of a thriving village is connected, informed community discussion.

Let's chat about something that's not regularly talked about, but very important: rear lanes in Robertson’s town centre.

Did you know that Robertson was originally designed with rear lanes behind many of our main street shops? These laneways were intended to support access, parking and servicing. And yes, they contribute to our village's unique character. But today, sadly... many are either unbuilt, only partially formed, or lack proper drainage.

When rear lanes are well designed and fully constructed, they can bring some big benefits to a town centre. Parking and vehicle access from the back of shops helps keep main street footpaths safer and more pedestrian-friendly, reduces traffic conflicts, and allows shopfronts to fully face the street, improving the look and feel of the town centre.

There’s also an opportunity to think longer-term: upgrading rear lanes progressively, as funding becomes available, could support local businesses, improve safety, and enhance the overall experience of spending time in town.

This is one of several practical ideas the Robertson Futures Group is planning to discuss further with Council - and just as importantly, with you.

💬What do you think? Have you noticed the rear lanes, or had experiences (good or bad) using them?

We've pictured some of the rear lanes here: The lane behind the Robertson Public House, behind Moonacres, Burrawang Lane east of Meryla St, and the lane behind the Motel.

🏡Let’s talk about housing choice in Robertson.

Did you know that 99% of homes in Robertson are detached houses? While that suits many people, it also means we currently have very few smaller or more affordable housing options for singles, essential workers, young people starting out, or older residents looking to downsize.

Across NSW, almost a third of homes are 1-2 bedroom dwellings. In Robertson, that figure is just 11%. At the same time, more than one in five homes is occupied by just one person, showing there’s a bit of a mismatch between the homes we have and the homes many people actually need.

Looking ahead, Council has identified land on the north-east edge of Robertson for future development. This creates an opportunity to think carefully about what kind of housing is built, and whether a mix of smaller homes, alongside family homes, could help create a more balanced and resilient village.

We agree that we wouldn't want to change anything that makes Robertson special. What we DO want is to give people more choice, help locals stay in the community they love, and make the village more viable for the future.

What are your thoughts? We’d love to hear your ideas and experiences.

🌿What does a thriving Robertson look like - now and into the future?

Robertson has so much going for it: strong community spirit, beautiful surroundings, and a village lifestyle many people are seeking. Like all towns, though, there are areas where thoughtful planning and collaboration can help us grow stronger and more resilient.

Here are five key focus areas shaping conversations about Robertson’s future:

🏪Local services & shopping
Access to everyday needs, like groceries, plays a big role in reducing travel, supporting local business, and strengthening community life.

🏠Housing choice
More diverse housing options can help young families, singles, and downsizing residents stay in the village they love. We're aware of just how hard it is for young families, first-time homebuyers and downsizers to find a manageable home in town, and sadly this is forcing people away from our village.

🚶Walking & accessibility
Safe footpaths, crossings, and connections make it easier for people to walk, connect, and enjoy the town centre. Where would you love to see more adequate and safer footpaths across Robbo?

🌳Parks & shared spaces
Improving parks, reserves, and creekside pathways helps protect our environment while creating places for everyone to gather and enjoy.

Over the coming months, we’ll be diving deeper into each of these (and more) topics, sharing information, ideas, and opportunities to get involved. One of the most important ingredients of a thriving village is connectedness: people sharing ideas, listening to each other, and actively shaping the future together.

Please join the conversation by commenting your thoughts below. Because Robertson’s future is strongest when it’s shaped by its community. 💚

Let’s talk about child care in Robertson👶

We love our local Community Preschool in Robertson, and many of our children have been shaped by the loving hands of those educators. While it’s a wonderful service, it doesn’t cater for children under three and has a long waiting list, meaning many local families are travelling to Moss Vale, Bowral or even Albion Park for child care.

A development application for a long day care centre in Robertson has been lodged with Council following community consultation, and it’s an important step in addressing a gap many families feel every day. Access to local child care can make a real difference: helping parents return to work, reducing long daily commutes, and making Robertson a more viable place for young families to settle and stay.

This is exactly the kind of issue the Robertson Futures Group wants to talk about openly and constructively. We know there are always more perspectives to hear, and we’d love to listen.

💬 What would local long day care mean for you, your family, or your business?

Hello Robertson, happy 2026! Let’s talk about our future (and a cool dip on a hot day!) 💦

After the heat of the past few days, many of us have been dreaming about how wonderful it would be to take a refreshing swim, and how special it would be to have access to a pool right here in Robbo. That’s why we thought this was the perfect moment to reopen the conversation about the Robertson swimming pool and where things are currently at.

For those who may not know the full story: a new swimming pool was under construction back in 2018 on land leased from the Bowling Club when, shockingly, the building collapsed during construction. A new board was appointed in 2021 and has since been working through a complex professional negligence claim relating to the original design and supervision of the build. We’re pleased to share that this long-running claim was successfully resolved in July last year.

At the recent AGM held at the Robertson Bowling Club, the community was advised that - after legal and consultant costs and site remediation - the Robertson and District Swimming Pool Association now holds net cash assets of $680,000.

Importantly, following the AGM, there was strong and unanimous community support for exploring a broader, more viable community facility, rather than a stand-alone pool. This expanded concept includes:

- A swimming pool
- An indoor sports hall
- A gymnasium
- A café / office space
- Potential use for emergency accommodation

Early discussions with industry professionals suggest such a facility could be commercially viable and professionally operated, and two possible central sites are being explored. What do you think about this?

This is exactly the kind of conversation the Robertson Futures Group exists to support - open, informed, and community-led discussions about what Robertson needs to thrive into the future. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more updates and inviting your thoughts on matters like this that affect us all.

Please invite friends, family, and neighbours to follow this page so it can become a central hub for discussion, ideas, and action around the bright future of Robertson.

Let’s shape it together.💚
