The Livestock Production Assurance (LPA) program is the Australian livestock industry’s on-farm assurance program covering food safety, animal welfare and biosecurity.

Since 2017, all Australian red meat producers have been required to confirm that they manage, handle and treat livestock in their care appropriately to ensure comfort and quality of life is maintained, in adherence with the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines.

LPA accredited producers are required to keep a current copy of the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for cattle, sheep and/ or goats (as applicable) accessible as a reference. People involved with animal husbandry should be familiar with its content.

Anyone responsible for the management of livestock on your property must have successfully completed training in these Standards and Guidelines through the LPA Learning tool (www. integritysystems.com.au/on-farm-assurance/lpalearning/).

Visiting and working with numerous cattle production enterprises across NSW often exposes me to the quite varied ways in which cattle are handled and managed on farm for beef production purposes.
One anomaly presenting itself is the effects time constraints and operator inexperience has upon this process which can invariably lead to cattle handling shortcuts being applied. These actions or decisions that bypass best practice livestock handling protocols in favour of speed or convenience can have dire consequences upon cattle welfare and cattle handler safety.
Understanding cattle cognitive behaviour (through experience, acquired or taught) and developing a stock handling plan and providing that information to everyone involved in the on-farm handling of these animals is a good first step in safely handling cattle. Ongoing management must ensure that these procedures are being adhered to and practiced in a way that creates a positive association for both the cattle and handlers.
I have witnessed many times when people harness the ability to move cattle with ease and efficiency it becomes an incredibly empowering and satisfying experience.

Value and opportunity to purchase a well-located lifestyle property in the highly regarded and tightly held Muscle Creek locality, just 10 min from Muswellbrook NSW. ListingPrice: $1,200,000.

“Willowtree” is an appealing and manageable sized lifestyle grazing property located along a fully sealed road, just 10 min from the Muswellbrook CBD in the famed Upper Hunter Valley of NSW. This former dairy farm is privately positioned, being set on approx. 49 Ha (122 Ac), its highly regarded and picturesque easterly facing aspect affords it generous protection from the West. This property has been tightly held due to its reliability, water, proximity to livestock markets and the convenience offered by the local shopping precincts of Muswellbrook.

Be inspired by the amphitheatre surrounds of nature and build your own country styled home to compliment one of the lovely building sites located on the property. (STCA).

“Willowtrees” key features:
• Water is a strong feature on “Willowtree”, with Middle Creek meandering through its tranquil alluvial creek flats, as well as four paddock dams and numerous underground springs/soaks. Rainfall to the area is approx. 650mm/annum. Being zoned rural/residential you can pump from Middle Creek for stock and domestic purposes.
• The grazing country is supported by a mix of creek flats and gently undulating hills overlooking Middle Creek whilst gazing further afield to the nearby ranges.
• “Willowtree” boasts a mix of improved pastures and fertilizer application along with native grasses. There are scattered large trees for shade and mixed pockets of juvenile trees. The property has been well managed in conjunction with a small beef cattle operation and is in terrific health.
• The current vendor advises that, “in a good season “Willowtree” has supported up to 35 breeding cows plus followers”. Apart from a section of boundary fence along the creek, the balance of the fencing is in very good stock proof condition, with the farm being fenced into five main paddocks.
• The capital improvements which cleverly compliment this farm consist of a magnificent fit for purpose lock up 18 x 9 x 5 metre fully lined shed with a concrete floor. A 5000-gallon rainwater tank is plumbed to this shed, with both being located on a professionally constructed, large level pad.
• There is a functional set of steel cattle yards with crush and good truck access.
• For the equestrian a true gem awaits. Situated on the banks of Middle Creek is a professionally built 70m x 30m dressage arena with adequate room to set up jumps. Constructed of washed river sand sitting atop compacted road base, the arena is levelled for proper drainage and fully fenced. Perhaps you may cover it with your own roof and turn it into an indoor facility.
• Electricity and telephone utilities run through the farm.
• The fully formed gravel access roads within the farm are in good trafficable condition.
• Easily accessible and conveniently located, with Muswellbrook just 10min away, Scone a 30min drive, Singleton 40 min’s, Newcastle 1.5 hrs and Sydney 3 hrs approx.
• A good mix of Infant, primary and secondary schools are located within Muswellbrook and Scone, with school bus pickup 1Klm away.
• There is a daily mail delivery service to the main road at the front of the farm.
• Scone regional airport is a 35min drive away.

This well-proportioned lifestyle grazing property will suit a wide buyer audience, ranging from near neighbours looking for further scalability, visionary country lifestyle seekers and strategic investors. Properties of this nature in the renowned Muscle Creek area, seldom come on the market and for good reason.

Be one of the first astute purchasers who will recognise the longer-term value this property represents by purchasing a productive, easily managed lifestyle grazing property where there is endless opportunity to create your own impression of inspired country living, just minutes from town.

"The Horses Stay behind".
In days to come we'll wander west and cross the range again;
We'll hear the bush birds singing in the green trees after rain;
We'll canter through the Mitchell grass and breast the bracing wind:
But we'll have other horses. Our chargers stay behind.
Around the fire at night we'll yarn about old Sinai;
We'll fight our battles o'er again; and as the days go by
There'll be old mates to greet us. The bush girls will be kind.
Still our thoughts will often wander to the horses left.
I don't think I could stand the thought of my old fancy hack
Just crawling round old Cairo with a Gyppo on his back.
Perhaps some English tourist out in Palestine may find
My broken-hearted waler with a wooden plough behind.
No; I'd better shoot him and tell a little lie:
"He floundered in a wombat hole and then lay down to die"
May be I'll be court-martialled; but I'm damned if I'm inclined
To go back to Australia and leave my horse behind.

One of the absolute delights for me; that is apart from working with numerous talented cattle producers, is seeing so many interesting glimpses into our rich rural heritage as I travel along. Here is one such feature I encountered recently which instantly captured and held my attention. It, like so many told its own engaging personal story and revealed its own particular legacy to its local history. Each one of these then in turn lend their individual stories to what then becomes our collective historical narrative.
