You may start seeing AML checks become part of the settlement process from 1 July 2026.

But what does that actually mean?

In simple terms, AML stands for Anti-Money Laundering. These laws are designed to help stop criminals from hiding or using money made from crime.

For clients, this may simply mean being asked to confirm who you are or provide some additional information during your property transaction.

These checks are becoming a standard part of the process and help protect property transactions and the wider financial system.

If you’re buying, selling or transferring property, you may notice your settlement agent asking a few more questions than they have in the past.

From 1 July 2026, new laws mean we all have extra responsibilities to help prevent financial crime through property transactions.

We know some of the questions can feel personal, but please know they’re not being asked to make the process harder. They’re legal requirements that apply across Australia.

To help explain what’s changing and what you can expect, a group of settlement agents from WA have come together to share this short video.

We hope it helps take some of the mystery out of the process and gives you confidence about why we ask for certain information.

After all, an informed client makes for a smoother settlement.
