Hi Elizabeth,
This notice was from Hayashi’s son Tadayoshi, relatives and 30th alumni secretariat confirming the passing of Hayashi Chujiro on 11th day of this month, at 2.30pm during treatment. While I can readandunderstand that a farewell ceremony would be held at home on 14th between 2.00 – 3.00pm, from the half way of this notice (i.e. from the 4th to 8th vertical lines from the left-hand side of the notice), the kanji got too blurred and I was unable to read the article which includes the date of this notice.

This is the Death and Funeral announcement made by the Son of Mr Chujiro Hayashi in 1940. Published in the Tokyo newspaper ""The ASHI " This is a copy of the actual news paper printed from Ashi. Transated :- This notice was issued by Hayashi’s son Tadayoshi, relatives and 30th alumni secretariat, on May 11th, 1940, at Higashi Shina-Machi 28, Shibuya-Ku,Tokyo.It confirmed that the passing of Hayashi Chujiro on 11th day of this month (i.e. May), at 2.30pm during treatment and that a farewell ceremony would be held at home on 14th between 2.00 – 3.00pm, and those attending are asked not to bring sake or flowers. Also, those attending the ceremony should get off at Shinano Station.
I do not know of the general arrangements for such notices back in 1940 and it could have been a simply typo but it is odd that this notice was dated on on the date of Hayashi’s passing, i.e. 11/5/40.

The Japanese Imperial Navy Training Ship, 1902- 1904 The KAIMON . On which Captain Chujiro Hayashi Sailed on when in the J. Imperial Navy. These two images are of the same boat. I personally obtained these from my onsite visit to the Japanese War museum Library that at the time was in Meguro-Ku Tokyo, 1993.
